Id reccomend the Canon Powershot compacts. I got a A530 which is an excellent backup to my Nikon dslr. Not sure what the latest models are like but my one was easy to use and produced great results.

I second going for a Canon, my backup camera is an Ixus 860 IS. If you're after something sexy have a look for an Ixus 75, its last years model so you might be able to find a bargain. I got one for my mum and shes chuffed to bits with it. EDIT: its a 7.1 megapixel

5 mp is fine produced jpegs at 2592x1944 most compacts these days would have higher mp numbers and are getting better by the day.
