As per usual, Bit-Tech have a really good insight to the i5/i7.

Reading these reviews has seriously made me wonder about my venture into Nehalem-land.....the 920 is obviously still faster, but the i5 820 isn't too far behind and it does appear the "old" S775 hardware is still kicking around.

It makes me wonder if I'm better off buying a X48 board + Q95/Q9650 and calling it a day....then I think "what about my X58/TriFire 4870 plan?"...what about it indeed..hmm....

I'm still holding out for game devs to make completely multi-threaded (and 64bit) games! Then, once my Q9550 starts to fill the burn I'll pick up the next gen i9 or whatever the hell it'll be.

As for dual GFX cards - not my bag, not yet anyroad.

I have 3 4870's and I have no idea what to do with them...my AMD board can take them all but she will be having that soon (along with her GX2) and I want to get a new platform on the go to shove them all in to.

But, as I said...after reading these reviews I just don't know if I want i7 anymore....it almost seems pointless as the i5's (they are all i5s, even though Intel named some i7's like infidels!) aren't that much slower yet are a lot cheaper. :shadedshu

The only reason I wanted i7 in the first place was because of its speed and relative ease getting a X58 board with the correct PCI-e slot spacing...now these come along and have pretty much confused the fuck out of me...what am I to do!?

XD

I'd still hold out dude - let the dust settle on the new P55/i5 as there are bound to be issue with the first releases I'm sure, by then you never know what bargins you'll be able to pick up. I'd expect 1366 to still be the better platform regarding multiple GFX though.

Reading the techreport and anand articles it seems that multi-gpu high end setups are better on 1366 than 1156 - the extra pci-e lanes start to make a difference in the scaling with dual 4870x2s and even with 2x sli with oc'd 260s(not huge but with the hd5k series coming out this month it may start to matter soon).

I'm also a little dissapointed with the overclocking - with such aggressive turbo you need to keep the OC low or disable the turbo and speedstep to gain a better oc but a chip which never downclocks, which is a little dissapointing. I'm also dissapointed that the onboard pci-e controller is linked to the blck speed which means when you oc the processor the pci-e controller needs a lot more power, meaning you can't oc on stock voltages and you need to up the power quite a bit just so the pci-e controller is happy (limiting the oc of the whole chip, which could do a LOT better on stock if it wasn't for this limitation).

Saying that the new processors look really exciting and are a good step forward in performance/power and will be in price when the hype drops a little.

Id say wait for P57/H57...
Id say if you have an old computer, sure go buy i5/i7 but if you own E8xxx/Q95xx/Q96xx skip it for now...

I will no doubt hold out for a while...I was going to pull the trigger on some i7 D0 action but it can wait for a while.

I may even say fuck it and get myself a Q9xxx to play with as I still love S775 stuff and its even better with cold weather.

I think the AnandTech has the best summary:

"I'll start this conclusion with what AMD must do in response to Lynnfield. The Core i5 750 is a great processor at $196, in fact, it's the best quad-core CPU you can buy at that price today. In nearly every case it's faster than AMD's Phenom II X4 965 BE, despite the AMD processor costing almost another $50. Granted you can probably save some money on an integrated 785G motherboard, but if you're comparing ~$120 motherboards the AMD CPU is simply overpriced."

It's not just faster, it's smarter, it's better. It's why today's title borrows from Daft Punk and not Star Wars; it's not more of the same, it's something futuristic and new.

I'd be inclined to say wait it out, if gaming is your bag, we're still waiting for completely multi-threaded games. If video editing and the alike is your bag, you've got a capable system, obviously you'd get more performance but would it warranty a whole lot of expense?

Once my 4 cores start feeling the burn, that's when I'll considering getting a new machine & by then, we'll have the i9 - until then I'll sit back and try and improve what I have for free & get my enjoyment from that.

what about q6600?

Well if you can run it 4ghz 24/7 i don't see why change it?!

i7 870/860 obviously suck price/performance ratio vise, so imho its either get the 750 or churn out a bit more for 920. But for anyone owning a decent quad that can OC close to 4ghz i don't see the need to change anything.

The difference (for an example) between Q9550/Q9650 at 4ghz, and a slightly overclocked 860/870 wouldn't be that big in real life.

Also if you own a SLI/CF config i don't see the reason to stick with 750/860/870... go straight to i7 9xx cuz of the kick ass QPI and 2x 16xPCIe lanes. It scales much better, as i've heard up to 40% better/faster that current LGA775 and LGA1156 configurations - that is if you have somnething like 4870x2 paired up or GTX285's...

The i5 750 sucks Price/Performance ratio???

Bullshit.

It is FASTER than anything AMD has to offer at the moment, even the mighty 965BE thats $60 more...the boards are about on par with price and RAM isn't an equation.

I'm sorry to say, but if AMD doesn't pull a stick out their asses and get something put out that slaps even the i5 750 then I see them trailing for a very, very long time.

This is coming from someone who owns a PII 945. :shadedshu

Bullshit.

I SAID 860/070 sucks price/performance wise... and i also said either get the i5 750 or i7 920.

And what the hell are we comparing i5 with Phenom II's... even my Q9550 OC'd to 4ghz battles out with Ph II 955...
