Budget laptop

I am wondering if I should buy my laptop now, Its the special prices that are coming up, and I have a 2 main choices... I'm not sure if I should wait for 32nm instead though what do you guys think?

Small simple notebook- 13-15" T6600 or similar with integrated graphics, 500$ range

mid range- 14-17" pref 15-16" P series? with at least something like a 4570? 700$ range?

I will be doing light gaming, but which games I will play idk lol, I can adapt according to my laptop

I would love high Bang/buck... Battery life is a plus, ASUS would be a BIG plus, else HP is good plus, lenovo I guess is good too, idk the rest, not to sure what else to say..

Will be used in University as well as home. Oh yea, alot of RAM/DIMMS possible would be great, I wanna try to do a RAM drive

BTW, been inactive for like 2 months so Hi again TPU

I would not wait. The 32nm processors Intel has just released (the i7 for laptops) are power hungry monsters and for high end lappies.

Get the dedicated card if you are going to be doing game and you are not sure what yet. The 4570 is a good target for a laptop. If I am not mistake, HP makes a Lappy that will use a dedicated 4570 for gaming, but turn it off and switch to the integrated Intel 4500HD for normal task. That would give you a good balance of power saving and gaming power.

I don't see any avantage over the Asus offer at $650. historically speaking Lenovo is marketed toward business use and tend to last a bit longer at a price premium of course. But specs wish, it is the same +$100.

GT 130m> 220m and the CPU has the extra mb in cache, wouldn't both of these combined make it much better?

The GT220m should be newer and possibly based on 40nm tech, versus the GT130m and its 55nm core. Structurally, they both appear to be the same, but the 130 has a 600MHz core/1500MHz shader vs. the 220's 500MHz core/1250MHz shader. If the 220 is indeed 40nm, it would run cooler and also have DirectX 10.1 support.

If you are choosing between these 2 GPUs, get whichever one has GDDR3 memory. GDDR2 models are probably going to be bottlenecked.

Personally i'd take any Nvidia mobile graphics over ATI's i hear that ATI's mobile driver division is basically non-existant and sorely out-dated. Also you refer to this guide for any graphics card, for notebooks.

That helped me alot when choosing a gaming notebook, its pretty fucked up the nomenclature and specs etc.

For example, a 9700m GT has 32 Shaders, whilte a 9700m GTS has 48 shaders,

whilst a GT 220 is basically a re-badged 9600m GT, not the newer 40nm kind...

Depending on what kind of performance you want, you be looking A LOT, there are laptops that cost over 1500 yet only have a basic IGP like 9400m GT/GS or a low-end Dedicated.

Then there are 1000 "gaming" laptops that have high-ends graphics but are basically not even notebooks because there heavy and use too much power to be mobile.

In the end you gotta find the perfect medium, I Highly Suggest any ASUS G50 from personal experience, or the Gateway FX7000 series if you can happen to find one on the cheap.

Also as one fellow pointed out, you may be better off waiting for the Core i3/i7 Laptop Refresh which will bring incredible performance/power/cost ratio

Just remember the point of a laptop is to be mobile, and "on the go" so Always, always check reviews and try to find out battery life!
