will a pcie 2x (or1x) card work in 4x slot?

i have an asrock 775dual vista mobo and it has a pcie 4x slot. becouse of the way that pcie works i was thinking that a 2x or 1x card would work as long as it fit pysically. has anyone tested this and does it work (or not)

pci-e slots by spec are sposta be downword compatable with all pci-e cards so yeah 1x,2x,4x cards will work in the slots above them(if they will "fit" they will work)

my buddys got a pcie 4port nic thats 1x in a 16x slot.

ashen's right. if you have a pcie 1x or 2x card, it will not only fit in a 1x or 2x slot, it will fit in anything up to a 16x. but you can't put a 16x card into a 1x slot, obviously.

This question has been asked multiple times already. The answer is unchanged. Slower cards work in faster slots.

If you break out the back of a slot so you can fit a faster card in a slower slot it'll work as well. This voids warranty though. Plus there usually isn't a reason to do it.

4x slots in my exp are just like 1x slots with the back already broke out, did that on an matx board so we could use a real video card with it, ok granted it was only an x300 video card but it was 100000000% better then the via unichrome that the board came with ^^

Ashen... that's interesting... so you squeezed a 16x card into a 4x slot? We would all LOVE to see some benchies, ie. x300 at 4x compared with x300 at 16x. (Whenever you've got some spare time).

It will be interesting to see IF the reduced bandwidth really has much of an impact. There has been a lot of talk that (with existing cards, games etc.) you really cant tell the difference between a AGP and a x16 slot, same GPU, same clock.

from what we can tell against his cube pc and its x300 based aiw card the perf diffrance is non excistant, they both suck for gaming

agp 4x was never fully used, agp 8x ofcorse was never fully used, the only way pci-e 8x/16x will be even close to fully used is with brigeless sli/crossfire setups, and the x1950 cards use a brige now so duno if we will see brigeless cards in the future.

I have NOT read ALL of the points made in this thread, but it sounds good for me, because (& this question of mine is a bit off/odd compared to the 2-3 posts I did read when this thread started) I have another "SLI" slot open here...

x16 stuff, & I had read enough here to get the "backwards compatible" rule, slower cards WILL run in faster PCI-e slots, but ONLY @ their rated speeds, etc..

NOW, I am wondering... & for good reason (DDRDrive X1 PCI-e slot mounted that I wish to buy this year when it releases to replace the PCI 2.2 SolidState disk I use now (older slower tech on PCI slot AND RAM it uses (PC-133 SDRAM)))...

* QUESTION:

Can the SLI x16 slots work in 'backwards compatible mode' to slower PCI-Express rates also?

and yes any card from a lower number can work in any higher pci-e slot, no problem, so sli motherboards allow you to use the extra 16x slot as a 1x,2x,4x slot

Aha! SMOKIN'... that means I WILL be able to nab the DDRDrive X1 (uses PCI-e x1 speed slot typically, & DDR RAM) vs. the older SSD I use & go FASTER on this rig in some things (mostly 'burst' related I/O stuff imo @ least)... & put the CENATEK "RocketDrive" back into my SQLServer 2005/IIS 6.x rig!
