Replacing thermal paste on a hd5870 with mx-3

haha probly not, n i was thinkin the same thing when i saw em, but i just screwed the heatsink on nice and tight and it made contact just fine with the chips so yea haha. course don't take my advice, dunno if it'd work on new hardware.

hey guys Iam going to start this shortly and was wondering if it was a good idea as well to apply a small dab of mx-3 onto the thermal pads as well? or is that overkilll or just a bad idea in general lol .Ill wait till i hear back before i proceed, going to be currious to see if it helps anything at least or if it was a complete waist of my time...my vote is....it will drop temps abit

i wouldnt put it anywhere but on the GPU .... but thats just me :cool:

NO...(bad idea)

The purpose of pads and TIM is to transfer heat, the more layers the worse it transfers the heat.

( there is a very good chance it will be worse)

nope it aint recommended but i agree it does work but i would use something non-conductive like MX2/MX3

ok done deal!! easy as pie, well wouldnt know about pie as ive never made one before, but with my o/c of 970@1300 I was at idle 55 , now Iam at idle ...............48-49, I guess its not a huge drop but a drop non the less! also no tamper proof stickers etc... overall I would rate it a 3 out of 10 on difficulty scale, I would recommend doing it if you are going to o/c your card, next best thing to h2o your card.. I used mx-3 as well

will try some full loads benches and compare with my old furmark runs too see how it does under full load
btw ..I didnt apply it to the pads as well just chip. pads seperated very easily from chips

ran furmark max temp before was 70, at my 970@1300 and now max temp was 67, 3degrees difference, not huge but lower,now idleing at 50,the factory paste was fairly hard, I wonder what they used? Iam sure it was no expensive stuff, wonder how a person could find out lol maybe ill just phone them up and ask them ha ha ha, oh well all in all it was well worth it in my opinion
and yeah a few of those screws are small, make sure if you do this that you use the correct phillips head screwdriver, otherwise Iam sure they will strip the head very quick

hey a 5^C difference .... not bad at all ... in fact I think its a great drop in temp ... i used AS5 on ma 4850 ... but managed to drop only 2^C ...

... then i had to flash the card with an adjusted fan profile BIOS ... to lower the temps ...

FYI ATi uses Arctic Cooling thermal paste on their GPU's. With their newer cards it's either MX1-2-3, but that's besides the point as an end user can spend more time doing it properly. I got no difference replacing my paste with MX-3, but the original paste was put on pretty welll.

Judging by looks of the paste I would say at least back to the x19xx series.

Yes there are, but they really aren't recommend on GPUs.
The best TIM around is the liquid metal stuff, but that is a little risky to use

However, the top few TIM products are so close in performance it does not really matter what one you use :toast:
