Try running 3dmark on both rigs and compare the score. That will tell us a bit more. For all we know it might be a shitty install of the game due to new hardware being put into the system.

BC2 is a complete whore for CPU power.


is your CPU sufficient normally to make the game run fine? sure. IMO, something else is eating your CPU power, be it F@H, WCG, or an antivirus program scanning BC2 as you play or something.

My brother ran the game fine on a e7400 with a hd 4650 @ 1440x900 maxed out dx10 with 4xaa with 30fps average. :/

Your dad has 4 gig and your have 3 gig?

Could be your ram running in single channel is causing a bottle neck to the gpu or something.

Is the card working right? Is it switching to 3D clocks when you game?


For example:

I had Firefox open with a youtube video paused(accellerated by the GFX card) and I started up BFBC2. Terrible performance. Checked with GPU-z, and the card was at "medium" state, it was still only running at the clocks it uses for decoding video. Closed Firefox, resarted the game, checked again and the card was at full speed. Great performance.

If you're doing something in the background which accesses the GPU, the card is damaged, or the drivers aren't working right - the card may not be running at full speed.

Pretty big longshot, but worth a check.

If thats it he could try Afterburner and use the On Screen Display options to see if it is running 100%.

Bad internet can cause system lag with some games to so maybe take your system to your dads and use his ISP and see if it's the same.

if its the hardware accelerated flash issue with firefox as he stated, the GPU will show as 100% - its running at 100% usage at the lower clock speed.

I think I figured it out. I'm not sure if this makes sense but I disabled the Catalyst A.I and it has been working great ever since.

I also overclocked to 3.0ghz from the BIOS, to perhaps help in terms of possible bottlenecking.

Bad Company 2 seems to be running okay. I'll check back later if anything comes up.

If turning off Cat AI fixes your problem there is something else going on with your PC. Cat AI doesn't prevent a person from using there video card in general. So to say that fixed it does lead to some other problem(s).

There is something wrong with your PC. To say that disabling in game profiles help increase performance simply doesn't make sense. Post the exact steps you took when you switched from a 4870 to a 5870 all the way to the point where you started playing games.

Try the extra gig of ram from your dad's machine in your's. x64 OS' can be finicky when playing games with the amount of ram they have available.

I can't run crysis with anything less than 4gb, but i don't know how intensive Bad Company is.

O, you could always just ghost your dad's drive and xfer the image to yours to test whether it is a software or hardware issue... or just swap the 2 drives, if they are identical systems.

I'm almost 100% sure it's ram related. Also, when installing my new PSU, the holes on the PSU didn't line up with the holes on my case, but I managed to find one that did so it's being held in place with one screw. It's actually pretty sturdy, it isn't like my computer is continuously moving anyway. The power cord wasn't in all the way and the power supply was flickering every now and then, so I figured my devices weren't getting enough power. When I figured this out, I also disabled A.I and tried BC2 and it seemed to be improved. I'm thinking now that it was the lesser power getting to my components rather than the A.I that was making my machine suffer in performance.

I'm almost 100% sure it's memory related. I've heard numerous times that a 64 bit operating system is recommended to have 4 gigs of ram. If the game was visually laggy constantly or was suffering stuttering I would guess either processing or video card, but since it's just when things are intense or a lot is on screen at once... wouldn't that be memory?

Also, in WoW, turning down view distance a couple notches pretty much completely solves any low fps. The description of the view distance is something like (Requires more memory and processing power for higher view distances)..

Yet it still recommends ultra. I've only yet to see one computer run WoW at completely full video settings absolutely flawlessly, but it had 16gb of ram.

Regardless of my games, one extra gig wouldn't hurt as previously stated I've heard it's recommended that you have 4 gigs for a 64 bit operating system.

It's not upside down, well, technically it is but with my Coolermaster 932, the PSU goes on the bottom, and the PSU I have now Is supposed to be mounted from the top I believe.

But I have a large fan on the top.. so.. this is the only place I can put it.. right?

please note that combining 19a + 19a is not the right way in reality your 600w coolmax can provide only around 30a max on the 12v rails most of its power rating is coming from way overpowered 3.3v and 5v rails the corsair unit above is 50w less and is rated at CONTINUOUS power not MAX and or PEAK thus in reality your coolmax is only on par with low end 400-450w units from makers like Antec Corsair Silverstone etc.

CPU overclock probably gonna peak around 200w usage gpu 150w easy hdd fans etc they add up not a lot but some same with ram your pulling easily 400ws off a shitty PSU thats worse then the ones found in OEM dell rigs damn if people actually looked at system specs they probably would have seen that.

When a GPU dosent get proper power you get bad frame rates stutters etc. Obvious case of oops shitty power supply syndrome
