I know that, but since COD 2/3 it's not really Tech 3, it's just based off it to a large extent. Kind of like Half-Life was based on Quake 1 engine.
That was not really what I questioning though. COD being based off Tech 3 is irrelevant to his post because it was licensed when COD was created and also when the modified engine was built. Tech 3 became open source a lot later. Also Tech 4 has not been used for the franchise and neither will Tech 5* so I fail to see any sense in his post...
EDIT: Ok, I see that I should have said "I don't know how that is related to id tech 4 going open source" for clarity, but it should have been obvious because of the OP...
* I have always thought that id has been very bad when licensing in that regards, they are so open and collaborative that really there's many many companies and publishers that once they adquire 1 license, they no longer need id tech, because id gave them everything they needed and taught them how to make/improve game engines. Even Valve can be put in this bag IMO, even if that was a long time ago.
