New build, recommendations?

Hey guys, I'm back in the swing of things, and after a Payday or two I'm looking to upgrade.

I'm looking to do some future proofing, so I'm thinking along the lines of i7 / xeons, recommendations for graphics will be appreciated, along with motherboards.

I'll be using 8GB of memory in it, and also I'll be buying an ssd for the OS.

The machine is a gaming rig, with video editing being performed and plenty of hd video being viewed.

Budget will be roughly £800, things like case, psu, drives and memory are all covered. I'm just out of touch with typical components used in the current Market, and this is obviously the best place to ask

the 6950 will stomp that GTX285 into the mud, no compitition there.

the 2500k is a great powerful quad core CPU and can't be beat performance/price wise. I see you have a i3 dual core right now. Only time you'll probably notice a difference would be when running programs that will use all 4 cores of the 2500k. Also, the 2500k has a unlocked multi for easy OC'ing. 4.4-4.5ghz on a 2500k is pretty common.

You're coming in at an odd time. Intel is slated to release Ivy Bridge in the very near future, and AMD can't currently compete with Intel in the gaming arena.

So because I'm not in England and don't know where you want to buy from, I'm going to cover the basics.

Processor (right now): i5 2500K, i7 2600k, or i5 2700k
Processor (wait for IB): Have to wait and see.

Motherboard (right now): Shoot for something with the Z68 PCH. You'll be able to get a Sandy Bridge based CPU now, and upgrade to Ivy Bridge later.
Motherboard (little patience): The Z77 PCH is coming. Native USB 3.0 and a couple of other features (PCI-e gen. 3 being the biggest) make a little bit of patience seem like a whole lot on sense. Given that these boards will hit soon, I'd wait for Z77 even if I was buying a Sandy Bridge processor.

Graphics Card: Toss up. Right now AMD's 7xxx series is the clear leader in performance. The 6xxx series is generally priced to move, making a 6950 or 6970 an excellent choice. Gaming with Nvidea is not my cup of tea, but if you want GPU based physx they are your only option. Kepler (their next gen. card series) is "coming," but so is Christmas if you know what I mean.

He will notice quite a big difference from his 1156 dual core

For less than £500 I just got myself an X79 system.

I'll be finalising ideas once I finish work, I have decided however to leave the ssd for now, and also stick with the 4GB ram that I'm using now, to free up funds for a new case.

I'll also 100% be picking one of those H60's up, the H50 I had was amazing, shouldn't have got rid of it really. Also, motherboard wise, I'll be sticking with Asus so that's more research to do.

Question. Your current RAM, what is it's voltage ratings? Sandy Bridge doesn't like more than 1.65 volts and is generally recommended to use 1.5 volt RAM. Also, RAM is cheap, and it's starting to get to the point that 4 gigs isn't quite enough these days. If you can afford it, I do recommened 8 gigs, DDR3 1600 or faster.

As they normally are, Jr's suggestions are dead on. That ASUS board with a 2500k and GTX560TI 448 will be one nice performing rig.

If this is your current RAM, Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz/PC3-12800 XMS3 i5... , I'd suggest selling it and getting the 1.5 voltage RAM I listed above.

I'm liking that motherboard, however I've been reading reviews and the newer nvidias don't seem to perform as well as their AMD counterparts, plus they seem to run hotter and louder. So I may sway to the red side.

Don't believe all that is said. It's indeed an odd time to build a machine. April is Ivy Bridge month. In two weeks the 7800 series from AMD will be available on the market and next week Nvidia will announce the first Kepler based cards (or so it's rumored)

I think the 2500k is the best buy out there and will be viable for a while regardless of what is coming out.

But I would wait to see what the pricing on the custom versions of the 7870 is if I were you.

if you hold off a few weeks ati cards will come down in price, you may be able to find a 7x card in budget or save on the 69xx cards. also the price on the old intel chips could come down also since the new ivy bridge is coming out, so come april you may save a £100 or so or be able to squeeze in some new high performance GPU in your budget which would future proof you even further. 7850 card should be great if it was what they say it is...

I think im going to go for the 2500k, and a motherboard very similar to the one shown here. Plus the ram and the H60, but likes been mentioned im going to await the release of the new GPU's and see how prices tumble.
