tldr at the bottom lol
so i posted a thread in the ati forums a few weeks ago debating wether to get a 7870 or keep my current cards and wait for something better, i ran a benchmark and my current cards seem to compete with a single 580 so im thinking i need to go above the 580. the current 680s are $500 the 7970 is about $40 more. i wont be able to make this purchase most likely til mid april so obviously ill be watching the prices. im just wondering what card you think would be better given somewhat equal pricing. ive seen various benchmarks saying the 680 is better stock for stock but the 79xx series has better power consumption doesnt run as hot and easily maxes oc sliders without worries of overheating. but almost for every bench that says 79xx is better there is another saying the 680 is better...seems like a back and forth battle.

my reasons for upgarding, my cards now will play bf3 etc at high settings how ever the AA settings really bog it down as do they with any card and also when frapsing i have to lower the settings down to a medium with aa off to get a playable 40-50 fps. im not expecting leaps and bounds in performance gain. because once prices drop ill most likely be buying a second card to sli/crossfire to really see the performance and a 1080p monitor

tldr: 7950 or 7870 or 680 for 1080p game play + fraps and future crossfire/sli scaling

In the benchmarks I'm about 300 points behind a single 580 and the 580 scores about 7 fps higher, that's really not enough for me to consider upgrading. However that is only a single benchmark I'd love for another run.

and what about games?

I can only assume from reviews that it would out perform my current setup but by how much...I dunno..enough to convince me to keep with a single card..possibly. My only concern going 580 is if it doesn't life up my current board is only crossfire support, so I'm leaning twards an ati card

Prices always drop we could wait a year for the price to come down to $200 but who's to say I won't want the ati 8xx then I'll wait for that to drop.its never ending

Find a good price on a 7970. I've seen several used go for $430-$440 shipped

7870 is my vote... they have a nice 20% OC range and are efficient. Still a bit expensive. Otherwise try to get a refurb 580 for the time being they OC very well and usually will beat a 7870.

The 79 series is just overpriced, I would wait if you go that route. Hopefully AMD will realize their mistake and drop prices back down to earth.

I think if I go with nvidia I'll wait got the 680 demand to die down a bit or wait to see the 670 ti perform . The 5xx series are all pretty equal performance wise to each other correct? I haven't been watching nvidia much lately so enlighten me! Lol

If you're gonna wait to see the 670 Ti, you are gonna be waiting a LOOOOONG time since that was the original name for the 680...

And sure, the 520 is pretty equal to the 580... :banghead:

Read up before you blurt out such nonsense.

ill check it out, but wouldnt a 7950@ 7970 clocks beat a 7870 oc??

edit: just checked the benches on it pretty impressive if this 7970 deal doesnt workout ill look into it more

Yes, i was merely trying to point out that the cooling solution and factory oc seem quite impressive and it might be a bit cheaper then a 7950. However AMD pricing is currently still in a transition I think thanks to the 680, So there's probably some good deals to be made in the near future.

If you must buy a card today, I'd go with a 680.

Your correct it looks like an amazing card, 680 is still unavailable at the egg I'll keep an eye out I got a really good deal on a 7970 with a 2 year extended warranty this model : XFX FX-797A-TNFC Radeon HD 7970 Core Edition 3GB 3... just a nice savings off retail since it's been used. So I think I'll close the deal on this and run a 7970. Benchmarks vs my crossfire setup and a 7950 coming soon
