R9 290x, installed in last slot on Motherboard, is it possible?

My concern is, the GPU will get too hot, and melt some of the adjacent USB 2.0 connectors. Has anyone successfully done this? I am trying to run 4 cards, 2 R9 290x Sapphire Tech OC editions, 1 Sound Blaster Z(removed the red top to make it more low profile), and an LSI 9266-4i for a SSD Raid for recording at 4k.

My motherboard is the Gigabyte X79-UP4

I extremely doubt that it would damage anything,if the core or vrms are at 100c than the PCB will be maybe at 80c at most and the air around the card will be maybe 20c higher than ambient at most.

if it's the buttom PCIX16_2 slot then it should work just fine ^^

It would be in the PCIX8_2 Slot. My logic is, the card, despite it's bullshit specifications, is a triple slot card. So I would like to put a card in PCIEX8_1, and PCIEX8_2. Then the LSI card in the top slot, and the sound card below it.

im running 3 290's on z87 sniper 5. one on first slot and 2 on 3rd and 4th slot. 4th slot not melting anything connectors.

you can see in that image the bottom slot (and 2nd) is only wired for x8, but other than that it should work fine.

I am not worried about running an R9 290x at PCI 3.0 X8...I would think that should do just fine no?

You're not going to melt anything. If it got that hot, the first thing to melt would be the PCIe slot. If that happened, you've got some other major issues going on.

those who have tested it say it matters very little, but that is on older cards which draw less juice.

that is the only issue i can see from it.

My problem with doing this, is, it feels like I need ti not plug anything into the USB 2.0 ports down there for the front panel in order to not have to force it to connect, otherwise it just doesn't fit...so it's sacrificing one thing for another. Kind of a mute point at this point, my second R9 290x is on RMA to newegg.com after issues with stability(reboot the computer and Window's would disable it saying it wasn't functioning) at normal clocks.
