Windows 7 vs Windows 10 gaming

Hi guys,

anyone benchmarked the games in Windows 10? Did you get any FPS gain??

FPS improvements from Win 7 to Win 8 were within the single percentiles (We're talking 1% +- 1%). Judging by the fact the Kernel for Win 10 isn't much different, I would assume no difference, or again 1% +- 1%.

Bare in mind Windows 10 is basically just a service pack for Windows 8. They just wanted to change the name to distance themselves from 8.

I havent benchmarked them but the performance has not really changed since 8.1 if anything all of my origin games are having trouble running and I see serious performance issues with them. The logs indicating trouble making the DirectX 11 hooks.

Though I can say I dont quite agree with a service pack windows 10 is different and its not just a UI change.

If dx12 is Win 10 only. It would be the must for gamers. I hated Win 8, didnt like the idea of bloody tiles all over the screen and no start menu....

7 seems more stable in gaming to me. Not much difference really. Just win 10 OS is more snappy.

I also wanna try Win 10 on real pc. I have it installed on virtual pc. Its running fine, but i cant test the games though.

I have only tested win 10 with BF4 and heaven benchmark on a spare drive.

BF4 got a few locks randomly. Not sure if its AMD drivers or buggy game or both.

Nvidia guys seem to have no major issues on win 10 from reading around.

also, sweetfx wont work for me in win10 sadly.

I havent crashed to desktop once and I did an upgrade installation nor have I had issues with drivers. My other games like steam and vanilla installs work great btw I dont have issues with DX11 games it only appears to be how origin handles it.

yea, and i guess its too early comparing win 7 and win 10 since win 10 is new and it just began rolling on the road when win 7 is pretty mature for OS

+1. The final W10 will look very different and functionality should be much more tailored to user's needs with all this feedback, compared to the test version we have here.

Not a Microsoft fanboi by any means but for those that actually contribute and look at the notes for things they are patching they are listening to beta testers and as someone who tested vista and 7 both the windows 10 preview is by far the most stable of the 3 while in testing phase. I honestly think anyone that overly criticized it. (and it does need some criticism) did not take the time to properly use it/provides no feedback/does not read patch notes or simply doesnt like it because it does not do the one thing they needed it for. I think alot of people approach tech previews as "free trials" and I think its an important distinction to make. Windows 10 is progress regardless of if people disagree because of something small like a UI change the technology is changing and Microsoft imo is listening to its testers and attempting to mold it to our interests as much as they can from a business standpoint (obviously their are things that they have set in stone)

Bench comparisons between W10 and W7 and W8 are going to be moot until Dx12 is finalized and we have games to test it with. Dx12 should be the single biggest performance improvement W10 brings.

We'll know a LOT more by holiday season 2015.

True, but you have to admit it's a LONG lead out time for what is essentially a W8 upgrade. What we're really waiting for on final release of W10 is primarily Dx12. That's what MS has centered it's release around and coincidentally, that's also when the first Dx12 ready games will release.

Won't touch 8 or 8.1, hate it. Yes, have several versions of it in virtual machines, but that's it. Win 10 I'm actually looking forward to. Am testing it, do like the start menu, huge improvement.
This version of 8 may actually work!

It depends how truly low level they can make the API. No one's done an extremely low level API before that works well for both Nvidia and ATI/AMD. That in itself is cause for skepticism.

It kinda sounds like they're saying Dx can be made a lot more efficient even without translating specific GPU architecture though, just in heavily streamlining how many instruction sets are written, and avoiding having to write repeated instruction sets.

That's what makes me hopeful about it. I have to wonder though, if that's true, what's kept them from doing this ages ago? Seems like ultra neglect for PC, but then Xbox uses it too, so that doesn't make sense. Then again, there's a LOT of things about MS that don't make sense.

I think they want to make the console games conversion easier. Dx12 will optimise the calculations out of the pocket...

Yes, that's an obvious benefit. Fewer, more streamlined instructions always mean easier to translate from one platform to another. It should also make the games themselves run better though.

How much better remains to be seen. I think it's safe to say their claims about the Xone's performance boost percentages are quite exaggerated.

Using Win-10 on a system that I put together to try it with. Was gonna have Win-7 on it and then they released the Win-10 preview, so why not?

i5-4670K and ASUS H81I/Plus M-ITX Motherboard.
H50 AIO Cooler Push/Pull
16GB DDR3-1600 Ram
HyperX 480GB SSD for OS, 120GB SSD for Games storage
EVGA GTX-760 4GB ACX GPU

Game performance is about the same as Win-7 is but I have had some crashes in Battlefield 3 and Mass Effect.
Normal system usage is pretty fluid and problem free.
The OS crashed once after they pushed an update to it. I had to reload the OS and reinstall my programs.
It's not ready for prime time yet, but I like it. If DX-12 is a huge game changer, I'll upgrade my PCs. If not, I may keep Win-7 unless Win-10 is close to being free.

I think to see significant performance increases we're going to need a combination of Dx12 and unified memory, NVLink (or an AMD equivalent), and stacked DRAM. Any one of these things alone probably will pale in comparison to the sum of them.
