Neither PC gaming nor consoles will be dead anytime soon. They both have their place and loyal fan(boy)s. While PC gaming has increased in popularity, the latest consoles (PS4, XBONE) have also sold more than the previous-gen consoles in the same timeframe, with the exception of Nintendo consoles (which was about time that Nintendo got hit IMO, they've been delaying technological progress with their extremely weak consoles, and developers finally got enough of it).
Not really...

Excepting PS4 (1.25 million/month), they're not doing that well compared to previous generations. If this generation lasts another 5 years, PS4 will probably sell 60-90 million consoles which is in line with PS3. Xbox One won't reach Xbox 360 numbers and Wii U has already long been considered a market failure.

That PS2 was amazingly popular. Back when people still rented movies and games from Blockbuster the PS2 section was a lot bigger. One of my family members bought one to play sports games on and he still uses it. He has plenty of money to upgrade but he likes his PS2 that much.

Wii U is a failure compared to Nintendo consoles of the past. Nintendo has admitted as much by planning the release of the NX probably around Christmas 2016. Nintendo consoles have always been under powered but the Wii U was just too weak for todays 3rd party games. I imagine Nintendo will step up to the plate with a good bit more performance with the NX.

Cheapest DVD player on the market at the time. PS3 was popular because it was the cheapest BD-DVD player on the market. PS4's sales are driven by Xbox One's lackluster showing.

No I'm not knocking the quality of games. GTA V. Witcher 3, Alien Isolation for example are great looking and great playing, Elite Dangerous is probably the the only game that really held my interest the longest but even that has lost me(Horizons of course I already have pre-ordered and that will get me back in space anyway)

Don't get me wrong it's not about quality it's about my motivation to play these great games. 2015 was a pretty good year for PC gaming as far as great titles

I've been having the same feeling around halfway this year. Then recently I reflected on that, and tried to figure out 'why?'.

I think it's very well possible to burn out from gaming because at some point, you think you've seen all kinds of gameplay. Best way for me to renew interest was to really consciously take my time with games. The past year I was that player that started skipping every cut scene, ranking or levelling a guy to max level and that was that - seen it all, on to the next. Now I take my time again, I let go of the old idea that finishing a game is somehow on a tight schedule because it really isn't.

By any chance, are you or have you also been an MMO player? Because that really is where that idea of 'rushing content' came from for me. I'm past it now, and gaming is fun again.

Another reason gaming turned 'salty' for me was also the boatloads of actual salt on forum threads and reviews. Being salty seems very popular these days, and of that I am also guilty. It's really easy to spit on a game concept and totally overlook the subtler and more interesting parts of it.

Right now I'm diving back into Pillars of Eternity. First playthrough when it was released, I rushed content and the game was shit. Now I take my time and I'm back to Baldurs Gate 2 nostalgia. It's awesome.

Actually Computer games are becoming harder to find. The Pc Game area at my local Walmart is much smaller then it used to be as a lot of games are now digital download and there for less cds and boxes on store shelfs.

Brick and mortar stores haven't been doing so great because of online stores like Amazon. The PC gaming industry tends to be ahead of the curve moving to an online model (including retail) before online models were popular.

Some retail (Especially The Witcher III), some GOG (Hell The Witcher 1 & 2 I barely redeemed from there with the retail), some Steam (The Early Access except for Subnautica and the majority of the "Indie" games can sod off.), and any other services/methods are fine. Might as well use Kinguin and G2A instead of the Steam "Sales".

had no idea there was such a steep drop off from NES > SNES > N64 I though all of those did well. The Gameboy and DS are crazy high. being how mobile we are these days it maybe that's where the money will stay. Hybrid console/laptop scenarios come to mind for something higher end, trouble is I can't seem to imagine one that doesn't look like ass.

According to IGN it is and to be honest, IGN shouldn't ever be the last stop for PC Gaming "news".
Consoles? Emulate them.

Consoles emulate themselves (e.g. Xbox One getting support for some Xbox 360 games).

Edit: I guess Windows does too (Windows 32-bit on Windows 64-bit).

Surprised at the Wii U tbh, as a biased owner of one I can say it's a fantastic little console with great graphics for the kinds of games available on it and as with all Nintendo consoles the offline multiplayer experience is great, looking forward to gifting my son Mario Maker for ~Christmas so I can have a blast on that :rockout:

I see that early lead that Nintendo got last generation with the Wii really helped them jump out front and stay there. I remember they beat the 360 by a few months, and the PS3 by almost 6 months. I remember for the first year you literally had to be at a store when they were bringing 3 or 4 units out to the shelves in order to get one.

The Wii sold like it did because it was revolutionary. It's a console that appeals to 5 year olds as well as 70 year olds. No console before or since had such broad appeal. The Wii U didn't provide the same appeal so it flopped by comparison.

If the NX doesn't do something different then it too won't do well. The market is already saturated with computer wannabes.

I'm to your avarage PC gamer what yeast is to milk: far from.

And what is an average gamer? I have no beard and my job is far from gamer stereotype. There is nothing that defines us.

I wonder what @Frick means by "average PC gamer" too. I imagine his view of us is unpleasant.

I wonder what @Frick means by "average PC gamer" too. I imagine his view of us is unpleasant.

PC has to be the longest dying platform. It's almost like a zombie. They've been declaring it dead for years and yet, it's still here and kicking well.

Only thing that's making it die are shitty lazy console ports that piss of PC gamers with retarded (locked) controls, locked narrow FOV, locked framerate and other console nonsense along with poor optimizations and horrible performance on hardware that's 4 times more powerful...
