To put this chart into perspective of how it compares to the computer market, computers sold 302 million units in 2014 alone grossing $304 billion USD. Computers sell about the same amount of units in a year as the two most popular consoles ever sold in their entire lifespan. That accounts for 0.4% of the global economy in 2014:

Comparing the two is laughable.

PC gaming used to be dying but its stronger than ever now.

Yeah, I like others have been hearing that PC gaming is dying for years and years and years despite the fact that PC games sales in dollars continue to rise year after year and future projected sales are calling for continued increase. It's easy enough for anyone to Google PC games sales and find the info. The fact is that there are plenty of gamers that want a better gaming experience than the consoles have to offer and those people aren't going away.

I think sometimes people get negative about the future of PC gaming because some publishers treat us like an afterthought even though they make a lot of money from us. Even a console oriented publisher like Ubisoft grossed $193 million dollars (converted from Euros) in PC games sales during their fiscal year 2014/2015.

Net sales is towards the top. The breakdown by platform is about half way down their annual report.

PS4 is their leading platform. Doesn't surprise me because virtually all of their titles are not only engineered for consoles but they advertise heavily as well--especially with the commercial ending with the PS4 logo. Ubisoft spends $314 million on advertising.

I'm surprised Other is only 4-12%. I assume that includes mobile. At the same time, mobile titles are much cheaper to develop.

The publishers who treat PC gaming like its nothing will lose a lot of money because they only look at short term sales and not long term sales. Japanese companies are publishing their games are PC now because they see in the increase in sales which is amazing because I dont own any consoles and I get to play them now.

Companies who don't get with the times and treat PC games badly wont last.

lmao, it's far from dying - only console I still use is only as a media player now (PS3) and I mounted my Atari 2600 to the wall and will be doing the same to my original SNES.

Indeed. And really, I noticed more and more people gaming on PC. Yeah, of course with not the highest expensive card out there. But most of them are happy as long as the PC can play the game.

Only console I touch is the Wii U for its exclusives. Otherwise I play mostly on the PC. PS3 has become the over glorified blu-ray player that my parents use now (took a bit of time to show them how to properly turn it off).

One thing PC gaming does have going for it: It is simpler than ever. Building a PC is much more easy these days, and Win 7 blows XP out of the water in terms of stability.

Sure is, and for those that like the console experience, PC gaming is becoming ever more consolized (which I do appreciate, as an OPTION, which it is) thanks to things like the Steambox.

It's not. The title of the thread was tounge in cheek designed to draw us in to read about the news that it actually isn't.

That PS2 was amazingly popular. Back when people still rented movies and games from Blockbuster the PS2 section was a lot bigger. One of my family members bought one to play sports games on and he still uses it. He has plenty of money to upgrade but he likes his PS2 that much.

Wii U is a failure compared to Nintendo consoles of the past. Nintendo has admitted as much by planning the release of the NX probably around Christmas 2016. Nintendo consoles have always been under powered but the Wii U was just too weak for todays 3rd party games. I imagine Nintendo will step up to the plate with a good bit more performance with the NX.

the NX isn't a home console.

I don't follow consoles very closely but isn't the NX to be a hybrid portable but also to be hooked up to the console to add to the capability of the Wii U. I thought this was Nintendo's response to the poor sales of the under powered Wii U. Are they going to be releasing a home console under a different name than NX this year?

I don't know what it is other than the Sharp Free Form thing and the patent floating out there

digitimes reported Nintendo wants to ship 20 million of these units by the end of 2016 and the only way that works is if the NX is really cheap and probably mobile.

So it's an oval-shaped multi-touch screen? Yeah, that's going to flop hard. Touch screens, in my experience, are really bad for gaming. It might be okay if it has physical joysticks poking through the screen but I still don't really see it catching on. It'd effectively just be an updated Wii U controller.

As a gamer, platform matters not. If a console has one game I really want to play, I will buy the console just for the frigging game which is how I ended up with PS2. Wii, PSP, PS Vita, PS3, and Xbox 360.

I might buy Wii U just for Xenoblade Chronicles.

No reason for me to buy PS4 or Xbone yet since those have no game I want.

As a die hard pc gamer I will spend 4000$ on a pc to play a game that sucks before I will spend 300$ on a console to play an epic one. Don't try to make sense out of it.

Steam games market worth $3.5 billion in 2015

It brought over3000 new games (compared to 1900 in 2014), increased the number of concurrent users on Steam from 8M to 12M and helped over 350 million paid games find new owners.

Not every dollar is going through Valve though, as some developers are selling their Steam games off Steam.
And remember — this figure doesn’t include free-to-play titles or DLC!
PC worldwide core games market is estimated to be around $27B in 2015 (Newzoo). So, including Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2 revenue, Valve is controlling around 15% of it. Pretty impressive!
Important note: Not all copies redeemed on Steam were sold through Steam and vice versa (GTA V, The Witcher 3). Some publishers report receiving up to third of their revenue from Steam games through third-party stores.

Steam does help indie developers via early access games...

Oh, those early access games ... love'em hate'em...

Here was an interesting article i read the other day (or at least part of it...)

'Gaming Technology' is evolving because of next gen consoles.....

There is so much wrong with this article i wish i had honestly taken a pic of the rest of it.

I stopped reading the article after the first few sentences.
