Gaming evolving because of consoles and yet, it's the consoles that are just now taking the "POWEEEEEEEER" route (which computers have been going with since forever. Sure. PC's are what's pushing tech forward, consoles are stagnating it. Or do you want to replace entire console every 2 years because it becomes "too old"? You just can't have both because you can't upgrade consoles. They are easy to use/maintain but essentially they are what they are. PC on the other hand requires more skill and work to maintain, but it also offers so much more back. And not only in terms of power, it's also in terms of usability. You can do so much stuff on it compared to PC. Hell, even games for consoles are developed on PC. It probably isn'tbecause PC's are that inferior but the other way around...

Computers sell about the same amount of units in a year as the two most popular consoles ever sold in their entire lifespan.

Well, how many of those computers were bought by gamers?

Projected sales for 2016 are about 30 billion $ each, with PC selling a bit more.

But thats happening on PC too. I think that comment is mainly tied in to the 'cloud gaming' one. Consoles are pushing the boundaries of gaming because of cloud gaming... Soon you wont need a console to play a console game. I dont think the guy who wrote the article knows about the existence of PCs, He probably wrote the article on a typewriter then sent it as a telegram to his HQ who printed it

Source? I suspect the PC definition of "DLC" differs greatly from the console definition of "DLC." Where PC DLC is often something large like an expansion, console DLC is often tiny like micro-transactions. Additionally, the MMO genre has a plethora of micro-transactions and, in some games (free to play which virtually doesn't exist on consoles), their entire profit model relies on those micro-transactions. One also has to ask if these "PC DLC" include tablets and smart phones where micro-transactions have proven a runaway success.

The amount of money involved in microtransactions is enormous. I recall an article about League of Legends generating almost one billion dollars in microtransactions in 2014 with Oct-Dec yet to go.

Regardless of the reasons, much more money is spent on that in PC market. (mostly MMORPGs I suspect).

But there are FTP console games too:

Since on current gen consoles you need subscription for multiplayer anyway (thank you Microsoft) it is a harder sell, Betheda considered it for Elder Scrolls Online though, but then changed their mind (for all platforms). I don't know if any console explicitly forbids subscriptions, I think probably not.

I don't have access to the publishing terms for Microsoft/Nintendo/Sony so I can't check. I don't think those terms are public either. You'd only have access to it if you were trying to publish a game on their respective consoles.

Nothing is set in stone with regards to sub models on the consoles. I would stay far away from thinking any kind of terms or policy that does exist, is an actual truth that counts.

The bottom line is, consoles exist to extract the maximum amount of money from every single game that is launched on them, with an unhealthy amount of middle-men taking their cut.

That's.... well... what all companies do, trying to maximize profits?
How is that different from PC world? Betheda's XCOM's "extension", for instance? Or several planned "DLC"s for the XCOM2?

Comparing platforms, does Steam Store really deserve a third of the revenue that flows through it?
Do Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo get more than a third? (and they sell re-sellable disks, not only digital downloads)


In short, playing games on PC as well as consoles, I don't share anti-console sentiment. If anything, Steam's monopolistic position is what looks troublesome.
