I was going to get rev 3.3 but it was 30 dollars more. I know it has a slightly better overclocking system, a newer revision chip set, and better phase power system, and better onboard sound, but by buying the 1.3 revision I saved enought to buy a e6600 instead of a e6420 and I'm told rev 1.3 is a pretty good overclocker it's self. Does anyone own this board, and can anyone direct me to a good guide to overclocking a rev 1.3 version of this board. Also are the revision that much different and is it worth the money to get the 3.3 and get the e6420 instead of the e6600.

My experience was quite different. I had both and Rev 1.3 was a much better overclocker. Got my E6400 running at 450fsb with 1.45V. 2 memory channels did not work so I got rev 3.3 as replacement. I could barely manage above 300fsb with it. If you want to be adventurous, the DFI P965-S will be back in stock on 05/22/07. This board will require some effort to extract it's full potential but it should be fun during summer. Oh yeah, add a small 60mm fan to the northbridge on DFI board. It's blazing hot.

Do you have any guide you know of to overclocking this board Im gonna struggle never overclocked a intel system ever. I been kinda looking at this and this appears to be a total pain in the azz to overclock. Is it really this hard or what, or am I just too used to AMD. Kinda wondering if this is worth it my 6000+ is smoking for now.

It's really easy as the Gigabyte DS3 board has the simplest overclocking option. Raise Vcore to 1.35V or more but 1.35 should be more than enough for 400fsb, raise fsb to 400, increase multiplier to your max (9 for E6600, suggest raise Vcore to 1.4 or more at 9x), raise Vdimm to 1.8 or whatever is recommended by your ram, change timing if it's permissible (Ctrl + F1 to unlock this option), leave north bridge voltage to auto and raise it up a notch (more than 400fsb), PCI-E and south bridge has zero or very little impact on overclocking. It's the easiest board ever to overclock. Hell that's what I did with my first self built system and it worked just fine. For the DFI P965-S board it's a whole different animal. I suggest looking at DFI street (DFI forum). They have an official overclocking guide for that board. If your 6000+ is working fine, do not sell it unless you can get a very good price for it. If you have to put another $100 or so more to upgrade, forgettabouit...

Would make about 65 dollars after all is said and done it's just the features on my motherboard are much better than the gigabytes board. Plus mine is SLI 16 and has heatpipes not sure what i'm gonna do yet could still refuse the packages automatic rma and keep what I have. The e6600 should hit 3.6ghz I would think If I go that route.

It does take a little while to adjust to the bios. Once you get a grip on how to use it....Can you say sub 15 sec. super pi? :)

Don't count on that E6600 going to 3.6. Some of the steppings couldn't get past 3.4 no matter what the voltage. I bought the 6420 because it seemed all of the current steppings were quite good. Less risk, less money.

Super pi is not every thing 6000+ is the king of floating point and that is the problem. Also the 6000+ handles memory better, but the e6600 beats it in raw power. I'm hoping I get a good e6600 but if not we will see. I would think it is easier to hit 3.6 with a e6600 then a e6420 but i'm not at all sure . I don't know I'm not Intel expert. If I only get 3.4 then it will almost be a waste because clock for clock in things like science mark2.0 my 6000+ beat several e6600 chips. Also it beat several C2D in 3dmarks06 with my same video card. It will be fun to play with. I had a choice the e6420 with a 3.3 revision motherboard or a e6600 with a revision 1.3 motherboard. I figure the resale on the e6600 would be better. Also I went with how well your board overclocked and it's a rev1.3 . Either way thx for you help Paul.

Since P35 chipset is out already, you should really consider buying it if you do decide to go with C2D. It's like $30 more than similar P965 board. If I were you, I'd hold on to the 6000+ and wait til July 22 when Q6600 becomes affordable.

If you are used to overclocking, and are somewhat hardware oriented, you should have no problem overclocking on any platform.

Motherboards and CPU's and RAM(and any other peice of hardware) pretty much all run the same way.

Is the 6000+ too slow for you to do anything? If not, then you should keep it. If you are insisted on upgrading, I'd suggest get something better than DS3.

It's beating several core 2 duos in the science marks 2.0 , 3dmark06, and has set a few record on a few web pages for am2. It gets killed in the cpu mark 2.1 and scores a 23 in super p1. It also beats several core 2 duos in cinbench 9.5 a 64 bit benchmark. The chips beating it are usually e6420 seldom, e6400 seldom, e6600 most often but not always. The core 2 duo chips beating all the time need to reach 3.6ghz or higher. I figure I will make atleast 65.00 on the deal and as much as 100.00 if I sell my current set up. Also my motherboard will do 405 FSB and I'm wondering if thats motherboard limited or chip limited because I see the c2d board hitting 490 etc and I'm wondering how well this board will overclock a AM2 +. It's supposed to be the one of the best AM2 overclockers. I'm also thinking no, joke, AMD will go bankrupt and we may never see AM2+ look at it's stock. These are my reasons. Also this version the the DS3 will hit 490 or higher frontside bus and cost 99.00. I do hate that it has only three fan headers mine now has like 8.

Here is where I rank to give you an idea if it's worth it.

For me, the move from AMD to Intel was more curiosity about the potential of these C2D chips. I want to see how far I can take it. Once I've done everything I can do to tweak a system...I want a new toy. Intel offered more headroom to play. So, in my opinion if you want something new to play around with, keep that C2D and sell the 6000+

A lot of your score in Sceincemark was down to your memory which you have kept, I am willing to bet with the same memory speed and timings the E6600 & 3.4Gig will beat the 6000+ setup. I am willing to bet that those places 17-21 in the rankings had memory running considerably slower than yours.

i have to say i beat those cpumark and super pi scores by quiet a bit...

SM =1936
CPUM =11532
SprPI = idr but it was sub 18s @ 1m..I'll check when i get home..
3DM06 (cpu) =3087
AM3 (cpu) =17163

To tell the truth man, i thought the 6000+ was better than that...bummer..

I would go C2D...I was an AMD man, but had to go where the power is..:rockout:

edit: the DS3 is a great mobo...the price is low and so is the RMA rate.....i'm not a fan of the Nvidia boards...tho they do have more bios options, they don't really oc any better than the 965P's, yet the Nv's cost a lot more..

I just bought that processor, board, and 2gb of the black ddr2 800 gskill memory. I'm going to be using a AC Freezer Pro (just like my AMD AC64). I'll be happy with anything over 2.8ghz. But I'm interested to see how far I can get it.

Hey i have an idea

why not build your intel rig, and test it against the amd...then you just pick the better one...not that you need to go threw all that work, as the C2D will eat that 6000+....hell if my E4300 does, you can bet an E6600 will...:rockout:
