I wonder what kind of medication someone would prescribe for a video game addiction...?

Note: i've been sitting here for 10 minutes trying to think of a funny drug name, kudos to anyone who thinks of something.

Probably something that either artifically shortens ones attention, or makes you tired. Or hyper for that matter.

If you cant sit still long enough, pay attention, or react fast enough you'll not enjoy games. Thus be enticed to not play as much.

i strongly disagree. as an avid gamer who has frequently spent more than 2hours a day gaming, i'm far from socially dysfunctional or agressive at ALL; indeed, i'm probably one of the most easygoing and non-confrontational people i know...

2hours a day is not an addiction.

Some of you guys need to learn what an addiction is... :wtf:

LOL!

Someone should do a study based on intelligent people that do retarded scientific studies.

*throws controller at your head*

Totally. I mean, you can have an addiction to booze even if you don't get drunk, at all.

I think there's a point to those studies. In some cases I think like extremely violent games can trigger something in a person already unstable. I also think death is unpleaseant, even if it's digital. Especially detailed death.

Also, if there's a million studies showing people (in general) get more agressive when gaming too hard, there's has to be some sort of reality behind it.

Its not an entertainment related "trigger."

Its society, their education and their quality of life.
In other words, its the other way round...

Its violent people getting attracted to violent games, its only natural to be attracted to what you ARE. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris were violent BEFORE they played Doom and listened to Marilyn Manson. There are journals about their making bombs as kids and fooling around with guns. So why is the video game or the gothic musician blamed for inciting violence when there was clearly no parental control, clearly no upholding of the law, clearly no care of the parents for their children?

Society is all too willing to look for a scapegoat.
It lets them believe that they arnt the thing thats wrong with the world. :shadedshu

Quite a fun game!

But yes i agree, the people who are all violent and crazy are easy to tell - those are the ones constantly swearing if they die/lose/miss, who treat their hardware like crap (slamming the mouse around when they do the aforementioned failures) and things like that.

They were nuts to start with, just like ex_reven said.

That's the point. They were not stable before the games, but I believe some very violent games might trigger such persons to a higher level of violent thoughts and feelings.

Like, if you have problems with your temper and overall violent thoughts, maybe it's not a good thing sit down and play Doom (or CS for that matter, where you actually kill people and not monsters from hell) as you probably don't need to feed your already violent mind with more violence. Also, games are a VERY good way to develop an already sadistic personality (I've seen this up close).

But sure, not everything can be blamed on the games. I mean, the entire system is messed up, so everyone and everything is to blame.

My thoughts on blame:

Parents should discipline and train their children to be able to live in the world.
If you vote you are responsible for your decision.
If you don’t vote you are responsible for your complacency.

I am a parent and I do vote. It can be hard at times to make a decision and it can be very hard to be consistent with a child. But that is our responsibility. If you aren’t old enough for either please listen and learn and become a responsible adult.

Any tendancies I may have are more to blame from my time in the military and overseas and any lacking in the social department is probably from moving around every 2-3 years as a military brat. Either that or it was all that Wizball I played as a young child @_O

Adrenaline is in play - its effect

Any game worth playing (i.e. realistic) will affect us - chemically.

Combat, driving simulation, etc. act to increase our adrenaline levels - the stress hormone.

Obviously, PTSD has been documented throughout military history around the world.

We, as gamers, are no less susceptable to PTSD than all of those veterans in history.

In a way, gamers are accruing the same PTSD symptoms that veterans suffer with, but without the physical injuries.

All that is needed to initiate adrenaline flow, is the right combination of sights, sounds, and activities. Game builders are constantly developing to maximize adrenaline flow.

After enough adrenaline fixes, we become addicted to the rush, and no doubt seek the same rush in our uneventful day to day lives.

Then you will have to shoot my parents for giving me a broadband connection and a microphone, and then you need to shoot me for downloading CS:S.

I've been gaming since I was 10, and killing Diablo w/ a meteor had no negitive effect on me.

A job that offers decent salary for very few hours work? College dorms? Even if I wanted to, there is no way I could find that kind of time. :ohwell:

The study may or may not show anything.... IDK.... I love gaming, truly, but eventually I got sick of sitting by myself :shadedshu, inside, for hours and hours, eating the munchy food cause I don't want to get up and fix myself something real, sleep dep, tired eyes, sore back, and generally feeling like a zombie after a solid session. And honestly it did make me anti-social... for two reasons.... 1. if I'm inside by myself for 5 hours I'm obviously not out with other people 2. I started feeling more comfortable with virtual communication, email, IM, even TeamSpeak (or any voice com) than I did actually talking to people.

Anybody else experience these things, or am I just not "hard core" enough?

On the college I have to argue with all the points. We played so many hours of games it wasn't funny, but at the same time in the dorms you could hear us cursing or cheering eachother down the hall, and drifters would go from room to room harrasing people.

Now I get together or call/VIOP/CB-FRS two or more buddies and we all play for hours (not quite every day but still quite a bit). I thnk when I was soloing WoW, HL, Doom, SC, Fallout, etc it did have an effect on my wanting to be social as much but now its actually a social thing.
