50 Games Tested: GeForce RTX 3070 Ti vs. Radeon RX 6800

Assuming both are available and priced the same, I would pick the RX 6800. I used a 3070 Ti before, and I feel the GDDR6X is the most meaningless upgrade, and worst of all, the increased in power consumption over the non Ti version of the 3070 is unjustified. Nvidia chose not to release a 16GB version, but instead slap some hot VRAMs that I feel is a mismatch for a card at this level. Ray tracing at this level is nice, but the performance hit may be too significant for fast pace games, even with the help of DLSS.

In reality, the RX 6800 is non-existent. The only RX 6800 you can get is a screenshot or photo of it. The RTX 3070 Ti may be available, but woefully overpriced when the RTX 3080 is superior in every sense and not that far away in pricing.
Yeah gddr6x is the worst memory ever.. its so inefficient its crazy

@W1zzard DOOM Eternal is Vulkan, not DX11. In the review its put in DX11.
Also 8GB cards must struggle with it. DF and HU show this (and I personally felt it on my RTX 2080 AND 5700 XT in Urdak). Unless its a small area / tutorial area, the 3070 Ti should get Berlin 1945ed in DOOM Eternal at 4K.

*EDIT seems the results are fine. BUt it is still in DX11 :p

I have to say I'm a tremendous fan of these reviews. Thank you W1z.

I really find it most interesting to see performance across games like Dota 2, in HD -> 2K - > 4K. You really start to see performance crowns show (not that I see a crown in this review, seems very equal) in these scenarios.

OpenGL, dx9 and 32bit is in the process of being dropped
dx9 users will be moved to dx11, and OpenGL to Vulkan
edit: also wasn't/isn't dx9 a launch option under the "-dx9"?

Still is not a dx11 only title

Why is Days Gone under DX12? This is the 2nd TPU article with Days Gone under DX12.

It's DX11 only. Maybe it's possible to enable DX12 via commandline, but still, mostly everyone will play it as a DX11 title.

Also bit sad to see Gears 5 is not included, given it's easily one of the most technically proficient games from the entire 8th generation.

Nice review, I would have loved some Total War inclusion. Am I ever glad that I was able to get a Sapphire Nitro SE 6800XT for $1400 CAD on Kijji about 3 months ago. Paired with a Gigabyte 32QC Gaming is getting better and better with updates. Sapphire really do have the best binned chips from my experience.

I  the new charts, very informative & compact. :rockout:Could only be better if you add the average FPS to each game.

The review just confirms that the 6800 is a smart choice. Especially if you live in a country with the highest energy costs on the god dam planet, or you don't want a heater in your summer room. The most power effiecent card out there, somewhere. Sadly before it becomes available it will be outdated & the 7800 just around the corner.

What I was always wondering, why is there in some games / game engines such a huge performace differnce? Is it because programming for specific hardware or bad driver optimization?

Cause some poor bugger had to test 50 games and remember what engine they all ran on :p

Nah really tho, point out these kinda mistakes. The datas valid, but fixing errors in the graphing and presentation improves the quality and i mean - poor w1zz. Poor, poor w1zz... but we totally are gunna see more and more of these showdowns.

One just can't help but love AMD
Oh, I can help it. I'm just a wallet to them as much as any company, I can enjoy their products, but none get my love.
Id pick nvidia because has more features, basically every feature on AMD is also available on nvidia but not the other way around
You can do anything you actually want to do with AMD.
Kinda sorta not really. Undeniably Nvidia has the richer ecosystem and feature set, but RX6700/6800 get more VRAM so that's nice.

Also looks like the 3070Ti has gained ground on the RX6800 since launch, Nvidia Finewine! lol

@W1zzard from me personally and I am sure others too, we want to see RT included, especially if the game turns it on by default on supported cards. I don't quite agree with your decision to not show performance with RT enabled at all, and just mention it in the conclusion. my 2c.

Did you turn on the HD Textures in Farcry 6?

@W1zzard I love the tests such an awesome showdown. I'd like the Horizon Zero Dawn to be included to be fair but still a great work.
I been wondering if You would be so kind to get the 6900XT and 3080Ti on the bench and do such a test? I know I'm cruising for a beating here asking for it and I know how much work and time it involves but maybe, :peace: you could do it :D and show the results? You know Christmas is coming etc. :lovetpu:

Yes

I'd like the Horizon Zero Dawn to be included
There's only two games using that engine on PC: HZD and Death Stranding. Including both titles would gives this engine too much weight imo

6900XT and 3080Ti
Probably 6900 XT vs 3090 first. A bunch of new games is coming out soon, so I'll be making changes to the list of benchmarks, like drop F1 2020 and maybe GTA V (any thoughts on that?)

So? There are a lot of games using UE4 but that doesn't discredit it to get more games in the mix with that engine. I'm not going to argue, just like the Horizeon Zero Dawn and I think it should be in the mix despite death stranding using the same engine is there

Works for me with the 3090 vs 6900XT :rockout:. I would drop it. How long we are going to milk the GTA V cow anyway? That game has been in the benches more then enough I think and if you ask me (you won't probably) I'd rather have a Horizon Zero Dawn in the mix instead of GTA V.

Almost every new game uses UE4, it's actually underrepresented here

True but if there are games using different engine it is bad to give some weight to the engine? Either way it is your testing bro :) Still great and that was just a suggestion.
Thanks for the review and waiting for the top dogs showdown :peace:

Dropping F1 2020's fine. I haven't ever heard of anyone actually playing it but for some reason every1 benches it (probs bc its a good benching game?), but I'd keep GTAV bc that's a perennial title that's actually played.

Also, maybe adding some others like that (CSGO, maybe?)

Well i don't think we should go by the logic which game is being played since there is more into it i think. There's a lot of games still being played and yet they don't get a benchmark place.
The game is OLD. W1zz can get it in the OLD GAMES or old engine benchmark chart if needed since it's being played but maybe benchmarking should put more emphasis on the newer games not from 2013?

True to a certain extent, but what use would be a benchmark if it's not at least somewhat representative?
I feel like a few evergreen titles in a massive bench like this are warranted, and GTAV's one of the better ones.

Thanks for the "VS"

Could maybe get a unity game or two in, for some engine diversity. I know they aren't usually considered the most visual impressive, but one or two atleast could be neat for some more engine diversity, and for the people playing Unity games.

Halo infinite (campaign in 6 days) would be good to have (slipspace engine)

Also "Ghost Warrior Contracts 2" is CryEngine V according wikipedia.

Somehow being representative in your opinion is to test a game that's 8 years old? There's plenty of great games from 2013 to represent your chain of thought and they are not added. Red Dead Redemption 2 is representative enough built on the same engine so you have a representative game engine (RDR2 is representative because of new features and techniques being used with the new engine) in the mix already and a new game nonetheless. GTAV, just because people are playing it doesn't mean it should be in the mix of games being 8 year old game. That's my point of view and I would not change it just because of a sentiment some people may have.
We can't have Horizon Zero Dawn (since the engine is being tested with Death Stranding) a fairly new game in but we still cling to an 8 year old game which we have a decent engine representative RDR2 already.
