Some games/apps simply aren't dual core optimized. What are you doing when this kind of load occurs?

That can be very normal, depending on the program or programs used...

If a program is not threaded it will not balance across both cores, it will only run on a single core...

If you are worried that you are only using half of your processing power, thats not true so don't worry about it. Multi cores are for efficiency not a dual processor.

Yep sounds about normal on todays software. Iam wondering why am I tempted on quad core processors while hardly any program use my current dual core to the max :/

Because even if the independent programs wont use the cores, your system has how many threads running at even basic boot? It helps there too...

If you are a gamer quads are a must, if you run lots of apps or a server, duals/quads are a must :)

As peeps have said I wouldnt worry. Even if your game used a full 100% of one core (50% total dual core), your windows background tasks etc are being loaded to the second core so your dually is doing a fine job even on unoptomized games, programs

If your getting that. And you arnt doing anything. You might have a virus using up all of one core. Otherwise id guess your just running non-dual core threaded apps.

You can use the Orthos stress test...just search for it in google or something. It's a stress test designed to fully utilize the CPU..it's the best one I've found.

Prime95 is not multi threaded, but if you lanuch two instances of it, it will run separate processes on each core. You will see each core loaded at 100%, and a lot of memory used up too! :toast:

Because you can have 4 proggies open at the same time working at 100% without slowdowns, for example, you could be burning a music CD, whilst watching a DVD movie whilst surfing the net and be defragging that 2nd hardrive!

Exactly, and for progs that are multithreaded (more and more as time goes on), you will see the benefit.

isnt vista dual core threaded

anyway i think it ultimately depends on the program if its been optimized for multi core it will take advantage of the 2 cores

i think thats a lie that you can watch a dvd and defrag and burn a music cd because if i tried that on my pc it would be slow as hell i think you need the ram to back up doing all those at one time coz i only have a gig of ram and think i need more

just wanted to ask why do people overclock i could see that getting a few more fps and making a game better to play would be nice but really is that few more marks in 3d mark tests really worth the bother of overclocking and paying lots to get a cooler and the dearer better overclocking components

why do people want to get quad core cpu if the programs arnt there i know future profing but by that time there will be a new cpu out and youll just get that
quad core isnt true quad core anyway

Yeah but we are talking "multithredded" genuine multithredded will use however many cores you have available....2....4....8 etc, very few around at the moment but some forget that Quads also are great for CPU intensive multi tasking also if your someone who likes to be doin plenty of things at the same time....bit like me really, I am a multitasker, I Play CSS whilst drinkin beer, eatin and smoking......4 tasks in one! :p

Not really a necessary post...

But in case you are serious...

Dual Core... 2x processor cores on one processor die.

okay that was kinda funny but what i meant was that if you dont have the other hardware to back up doing about 5-10 programs at once its almost impossible for example if you have a core 2 duo but only 512mb of ram i cant see someone doing lots of intensive programs at once

i know it can increase performance if you genuinely wanted to get the best performance out of your machine then fair enuf

i dont see why people spend loads on ram that can overclock loads and spend extra on a cpu because it clocks 200mhz more because your only gonna change it next year or in 2 years anyway

multi threaded yeah i know i meant that however many core coz i know that servers run more than 4 cores sometimes hundreds and you can get mbo with 2 cpu sockets

Wasnt one of the quake games optimized for multiple cpus i mean a really old one might have been quake 3 arena

Fair point and of course RAM is VERY important........the pagefile helps also tho :D And yes Quake 4 receivced a multithredded patch, there are a few games around now that are genuinly multithredded, about 7 at last count.

You can do that, but its silly because windows will automatically move processes to different cores.

But in case you want to know how, press ctrl+alt+del for your task manager, right click the process in the process tab you want to change the core, then click set affinity, core 0, core 1 etc dependent on how many cores you have.
