Hello so i just bought an 4070 TI Suprim x from msi for 649€ it was a deal and it was gone withing minutes so i was quite lucky.

BUT now i realized that, the gpu needs: 1x 16-Pin PCIe 5.0 (via Adapter: 3x 8-Pin PCIe)

But i have a Seasonic GX Focus 550 Watt and i think i dont have 3x8 pins. So how can i get it to work do i need a new PSU? Or is there something like an adapter? Since 2x8 pins should give 300 Watts and the cards needs 285 Watts so i dunt undertsand why it needs 3x8 pins :(

I would really appreciate the help since if i really need a new PSU or Adapter i wanna order it as soon as possible so i can get the gpu to run when i get it right away. And recommendations would be really great since im not to much into hardware so i need you pros for help but im learning :) its my first gaming pc.

also sorry if my english is bad im from europe and english is not my native language, i hope its good enough to understand my issue

kind regards Patrik

You will need a new PSU anyway. I would absolutely not recommend running a 4070Ti, much less a factory OC model, on a 550W PSU, regardless of its quality. It’s just not enough juice, though theoretically, depending in the rest of the hardware, it miiiiiiight work, but that’s borderline and risky.
Now yes, regular 4070Ti models mostly use a double 8-pin to 16-pin adapter. You can shop around for one and try that. Should work, though you might have to lower the power limit of the card back to where it’s closer to NV spec. The Supreme takes 3x8 because of its higher potential power limit for overclocking.
Again though, you really probably just should get a new, higher capacity PSU with all the connectors you’re likely to need in the future. 550 is just not a lot of power for high-end hardware these days.

Rest of my hardware is a ryzen 5800x3d and thats pretty much it no extra fancy stuff just what you need and that is enough for me :) with a noctua cooler since i am living where noctua is lol

okay then i will simply get a new psu and sell my old one which is almost new lmao.

But i really want that card it looks so good and the price is insane for where i live. a good model of a 4070 super is more expensive just for comparison.

Can you giv me e a reccomendation for a psu? i just want to have enough power for future too but i will never get a gpu that will sip ower 300 watts gpu only. :)

I will also undervolt the card but still it should work stock with no problems of course :D

thanks it really helps

i think 750 watts should be enough for you?

i recently got a corsair RM750e at a good price. Maybe you can look around for some offers.

Just take a look at the PSU Tier List and get whatever is A tier recommended (gold text) with the wattage you need (I personally wouldn’t go less than 800W nowadays) and is a good deal in your particular place of residence. Giving concrete recommendations is nigh on impossible considering regional variations in price and availability.

RM is not RMe. So it is a different model, platform and, as such, a somewhat worse choice. I would strongly suggest not trying to save a buck on a PSU, it’s the most important component of any PC. And whether something is “enough” is irrelevant, having decent overhead is always beneficial. Just go for a 850W RMe and have no worries for the foreseeable future about anything.

i will listen as. thanks :) i will take the bigger one . i often read never save on the psu. and it makes sense. power delivery is important.

It literally tells you on the Amazon page on its pictures what cables it comes with. I noticed that and I don’t even speak German.

as is said my knowledge is very minimal besides gpu undervolitng and overclocking and cpu curve optimizer and enabling xmp im a moron, i saw it but i cant even tell you for what half these cables are only by looks alone without manual. i only asked because if i need more cables i would want to order all at once.

Benchmark Scores I once clocked a Celeron-300A to 564MHz on an Abit BE6 and it scored over 9000.
I'd be looking at an A-tier 850W PSU for this build using all my own rules-of-thumb.
Corsair, Seasonic, and FSP are my go-to brands but it obviously depends on what's available where you live.

A 650W A-tier PSU is the bare minimum and you'd expect it to be running at about 75% load when gaming with this build, which means fan noise and higher temperatures. New GPUs are getting hungrier for more power so expect the next GPU you buy after this 4070Ti to need a 750W or 850W PSU even if this 4070Ti doesn't need one right now.

You will get both a 16 pin cable that actually might be enough even if it is from double 8-pin on the PSU side, and two 6+2-pin cables, one a double, that will be fine for the adapter of your 4070Ti, if you’d prefer that way.
In short - it’s fine.

The 5800X3D consumes 120 W at worst with the default voltage, and the rest of a typical PC could use up to 50 W. With a high quality 550 W power supply you should still be able ro run the 4070Ti Suprim without a problem:

However, your GX-550 lacks the third required 8-pin PCIe connector, and it's always good to have a little power in reserve. Consequently, I'd recommend getting a 650 W Tier A PSU at minimum, or a 750 W one with a view to possible upgrades.

im gonna be hoonest i never ever heard my psu like ever.

case fans are at 500rpm.

noctua cooler ist at 1000-1700rpm which is the most aduible noise on my pc but i9 got told the 5800x3d is heaty boy by nature everything else is below 30db in my pc.

so i dont worry about noise at all. :)

yea but it says the gpu needs 3x8 pin thats the reason i need a new psu since my old one only has 2x8 pin. im confused tbh

You need a new PSU because running a 4070Ti on a 550W is playing with fire. I firmly disagree with the poster above about it running “no problem”. Being on the edge is never good.
And again, what the card “needs” is a certain amount of power. With a new PSU you will have a choice of seeing if it runs fine with a dual 8-pin to 16-pin cable (so no adapter needed) and if that’s not happening (unlikely) you will have two 8-pin cables one of which is dual-port in the GPU side to plug into 3x8-pin adapter. Understand that what the card will pull and what the connectors on the PSU side can provide is not the same.

but rtx 4000 series cards come by default with an adapter i thought?

it literally says this:

1x 16-Pin PCIe 5.0 (via Adapter: 3x 8-Pin PCIe)

16 pin adapter is coming with the card you plug that in the card and the 3x8 pins goes into the psu, thats how i understand it.

my current psu has no room for 3x8 pins only for 2x8 pins at least i think so. thats the reason i need a new pus so i can turn on the pc at all. (forget the power for now its only about the cables i get what you say with the power i saw the review of this card on igorslab he recommends a 650 watt psu and he knows his stuff).

so my simple question was if i order this https://www.amazon.de/Corsair-RM750e-Vollmodulares-Geräuscharmes-ATX-Netzteil/dp/B0BVL2CTX4/?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_w=KURk6&content-id=amzn1.sym.11e54cbd-b548-409c-b9f8-fd3c6bf78907&pf_rd_p=11e54cbd-b548-409c-b9f8-fd3c6bf78907&pf_rd_r=VH6077EATAFTZAVXJ8NZ&pd_rd_wg=yZyNk&pd_rd_r=7804d4fc-a1b8-4bce-98e7-80c53461b35f&ref_=pd_gw_dealz_cs

do i need any extra cable or am i good to go? thats it thats the only answer i really need now.

this is my current psu right. so i actually could plug in 3x8 pins i have no clue anymore

i see 1 for cpu and 3 could be therotically used for gpu or not?

yes theroetically it should since its only 285 watts and igor said the gpu almost never hever hits its power limit and on average it sits at only 250-260 Watt especially at 1080p and 1440p.

I understand they made it 3x8 pin because it has 360 watt powerlimit which makes absolutely no sense anyway since if it doesnt hit its stock 285 powerlimit there is no use of 360 watt powerlimit is msi stupid?

and even if which one of the 3 would you plug in ? or does that not matter. this shit is really confusing for a noobie.

I don't know why they included a 3x8pin adapter, I know some 4080s shipped with a 2x8pin adapter. I am assuming it would work with only 2x8pin plugged it, if you have the card you can go ahead and try it, either the thing will boot or it wont.

Power wise 550W is kind of anemic but should be fine.

With the 3x8 adapter, only two are plugged into the PSU. These are the cables that come with the PSU and you can use the yellow option direct to the video card or the orange option with your 3x8 adapter.

i dont understand it why are there 2 options why is this not standardized?

So the yellow ones make tha adapter that comes with the graphics card obsolete? okay i dont understand like at all. why is this only 2 pins not 3 like it says on the gpu decription? 7900xt uses way more power and it only uses 2x8 pin wtf is this shit

so should i use the orange option or the yellow one?

also why not simply buying such a cable the yellopw ones and plug it in my psu now ? also my psu has 4x8 pins and it doesnt work why is that? like i showed on the picure above?

it seems like everybody is saying something different since im reading since hours in fourms and google and what not and i have no clue whats true or not anymore.

so tell me please why is this gpu not working with my psu(forget the 550 watt for now i just wanna know why)

as you can see i have it 4 times. 1 is used by the cpu and 2 are used now for my current gpu why not use the 4th one with the new gpu why would that not work?

are these people stupid who engineered this or am i missing something this should be plug and play and not like this crap. im really losing interest in the new gpu if its such a bullshit to get it to work or the correct answers. since im not getting answer on my question i simply get even mpore questions.

i simply need 1 more 8 pin cable so i can plug it in why should that not work? tell me.

Screenshot (447).png

this is all i need for my current psu hypothetically isnt it?

Benchmark Scores I dont have time for that.
this is all i need for my current psu hypothetically isnt it?
If you intend to start a fire or burn out components sure. In no world would I recommend a 550w unit with a 5 series and cpu and a 4 series Nvidia card.

your power transitions alone will have that thing tripping in no time.

just get the better unit and be happy.

So the yellow ones make tha dapter that comes with the graphics card obsolete? okay i dont understand like at all. why is this only 2 pins not 3 like it says on the gpu decription?
Because MSI overprovisioned for higher power limits. It might not even matter in practice.

so should i use the orange option or the yellow one?
Both will do.

also why not simply buying such a cable the xellopw ones and plug it in my psu now ? also my psu has 4x8 pins and it doesnt work why is that? like i showed on the picure above?
Never use cables that are not the ones that came with your specific PSU. The pin-out is not standardized. Also, what do you mean “it doesn’t work”?

so tell me please why is this gpu n ot working with my psu(forget the 550 watt for now i just wanna know why)

as you can see i have it 4 times. 1 is used by the cpu and 2 are used now for my current gpu why not use the 4th one with the new gpu why would that not work?
It would, if you had the cable. You not having one was the whole point, no?

i simply need 1 more 8 pin cable so i can plug it in why should that not work? tell me.
Nobody said it wouldn’t? Provided you had the cable and were 100% sure it’s compatible with your exact PSU model. You would be dangerously on the very border of acceptable wattage, but it would work. Technically.

Again, I don’t understand the confusion here.
