I talked to her yesterday and she sent me 300$ into my paypal. Her current one died so im gonna build a nice cheap one. Just uses the internet for maybe a few hours a day, thats what she said and she doesnt game at all.

btw leave the psu on .... save the money for something else...

I agree with tzitzibp you should have built it based on one of the lower core 2 duos, even that is better than the athlons, save the money on the PSU and lets be honest for a few hours browsing daily onboard VGA is good enough.

I already got the parts and built it Plus like I said, going intel was way over budget. you dont need a dualcore to surf the internet anyways -.-

@echo75 & tzitzibp - No, never use a cheap no-name psu if you don't have to. He made the right choice for someone like her. If a psu goes, it can kill every single component in the pc. Cheap no-name ones are more likely to go than good ones.

A user like her, that only surfs the net, has no need for a Core2 system. It's just an added expense, with no real benefits to her.

And judging by the fact she had a 20GB hard drive, I'm gonna have to guess that this machine will be much faster than the one she's replacing.

@Shadowfold - The only thing I might've done differently is bought a cheaper case without a psu, and tried to upgrade to an X2, if it would still fit in the budget.

Well about the case it was the cheapest Micro ATX case available at the time. I didnt want to put together a huge mid tower(and thank god I didnt) cause her desk barely fits a Micro ATX!

Ok, so working in the labs, we still have the old 3.0 P4s, as well as the E6300s. I have to say, even the lower duel cores are much better. Trust me in stateing that it would be much more worth putting 50 more bucks at the most into something tha has multi core. Some of the lower lower cores are miles of the single.

Just my opinion, the single market is gone.

Why not save the few bucks and stick a LE-1150 in it? The performance difference for what she does will be non-existant.

You can also throw an 80GB in there instead of the 160GB.

The difference between those two should give you enough money to up the RAM to 2GB, which will help IMO.

Haha, if I can browse the web on a Dell Inspiron 4000, then I'm sure this PC will suffice. (the Inspiron has a PIII-M @ 850 MHz, 512 MB SDRAM-100, 10 gig HDD, ATI M3 Mobility graphics, and a 1400 x 1050 14.1 inch screen, and it still runs for 2 - 3 hours on an 8 year old 55 WHr battery!). You don't even need 1 gig of RAM for XP, I've seen it run on 128mb! (Not that you should... lag, lag, lag, but it runs.)
