IE7 Genuine Advantage Validation No Longer Required

Steven Reynolds, Microsoft's Internet Explorer Program Manager, has updated the IEBlog letting everyone know that you can now update to Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) without the previously required Windows Genuine Advantage validation.

Because Microsoft takes its commitment to help protect the entire Windows ecosystem seriously, we're updating the IE7 installation experience to make it available as broadly as possible to all Windows users. With today's "Installation and Availability Update," Internet Explorer 7 installation will no longer require Windows Genuine Advantage validation and will be available to all Windows XP users.

Because IE6 is old/unsafe and they want to prevent the growing of the open source Firefox and other browsers, which are updated regularly.

Wonder if this is an attempt on the business market, to get them to upgrade. Doesn't make much sense as so many apps out there still don't work with it.
Yeah probably more likely its too many people trying open source.

I use IE6, IE7 and Fx for testing purposes (CSS breaks so easily in IE...)
Need to install Opera too sometime, but I think Opera and Firefox interpret CSS the same.

I like IE 6.0 more than Firefox, although I do miss the tabs.

Good thing I don't have to choose between two good things, because I have the ultimate browser - Avant!

well put, I was thinking the same thing. With the recent decline of IE use, this seems like a logical step. However, IE7 still has some serious flaws with it. Incompatibility with some websites and java technology for instance.

Something tells me that Microsoft couldn't give less of a flip whether or not Internet Explorer works nicely with Java, as long as they have ActiveX. (Though, I must admit, why they've stopped trying to Embrace, Extend, and Extinguish Java baffles me.)

However, I must commend Microsoft for realizing that supporting all installations of Windows (even those that are pirated) is in their best interest.

I actually really like IE7 I have no problems, I sleek and easy to use. I don't see how people say that IE is junk, they need to stop installing trials and going to unsecured websites, So they don't get adware, spyware don't blame things on IE, blame yourselves lol.

Microsoft is already beta testing IE8 anyway. I'm using Firefox 3 RC1 myself and I've been using Firefox extensively since it went 1.0 final. I don't have a reason to go back.

I'm forced to use it at work. It has issues, doesn't handle tabs with large websites too well.
