been looking at a possible new build/upgrade (kind of) anyone know what the AMD Phenom X3 Triple Core 8450 2.1GHz Socket AM2 proc is comparable to??,

would it serve me better than my e4300 ? would i be able to get it to 2.8ghz on air?

anything less than that and i dont think i would want to know but im aiming for a budget xfire rig (hence amd cause intel xfire boards are too expensive)and am looking at this proc (always upgradeable anyway) and mobo

Not too many own them. I have no idea what the overclockability is of these chips.

In most reviews they had a hard time getting a 8750 to 2.8ghz. At stock speeds however, it does beat out an E7200.

so even if i can only get to 2.5-2.6Ghz on this chip it wont be a total downgrade from a E4300 ? I cant see it being that noticeably slower in most things (aside maybe superPI)

read a reveiw earlier today comparing it to the e8400 with no OC'ing involved. Gaming performance wise, it beat the e8400. I'll find you a link in a minute

It depends on what you do. If the program you use is multi-core aware then the tri will beat a comp C2D. If its single threaded one then probably the C2D will perform better.

The TLB is fixed. So I think it should be fine.

OCing depends on mature Bios. Go with Biostar boards. They clock decent.

And one more thing, go with native AM2+ board, don't go with a AM2 board that supports AM2+ cpu with Bios update. They suck.

In fact my ECS 8200A is an awesome board (if you don't listen to people giving crap about ECS). You can see my sig for the speed I have achieved. And it goes more with more voltage. But that is plenty fast for me. And it comes with awesome customer support and 3 years warranty.

should be pretty decent for ocing. I expect the same of these as some of the X4 chips. 2.8ghz shouldnt be a problem with good cooling and memory, but I wouldnt expect too much more from that.

The x3 series are just the x4 series with a core disabled and a diff multi. So I think it's safe to say that that chip will OC about as well as my 9550, the best I've gotten out of my 9550 was 2.75 (275*10) on 1.35v BIOS (something like 1.4ish in CPU-z)
Also granted my Ram is holding me back and I haven't really put forth a real stong effort to overclock yet. (SLi troubles have been consuming all my time since I've gotten this mobo)
