The CD/DVD drive does not function at all for any other media (program, video or audio). It only functions when I do a boot from disk with the Windows 7 disk.

If there is a specific problem or dirt then how could it read the Windows disk each and every time if I do a boot from disk?

sneekypeet, i've tried searching different alternative drivers. Do you have a link to it? thanks scaminatrix, the only thing i've installed is Magicdisk but this was installed well before the problem occured.
