First of all - Thanks for the replies. Well I ain't much for FPS type of games anymore (CS:S, Crysis.. you name it). But I do like strategic cames like Supreme Commander, and at certain points it tends to lag slightly (animation lag, not network). Other than that it's rather ok.. Sure I could OC it via CCC, as I ain't running "hacked" drivers anymore. I tested to OC it once to half of the amount on both clock and memory, it did help.. But temps..

Maybe I should invest in better cooling instead??

supreme commander is all CPU. trust me, i love the game to death but its got the worst, most CPU intensive AI known to man.

Cooling aint a bad idea. just remember that you dont need to OC to the max, if you can get a 20% OC but it runs hot - go for 15%, or 10%.

Hi TechnicalFreak ...

Maybe crossfiring a 3870 with your X2 until HD5ks come about then later afterwards upgrading your display ...

when i was on one, even at 3.6Ghz i'd still lag with 3+ AI's late game. in the end i moved to modded AI's (sorian/DuncanE) to reduce it, but it never did get solved. I guess they were too busy working on Supcom 2

Wait for the DX11 cards, then you'll have better choices + better prices.

Why if you dont mind me asking, the performance is pretty similar, the 4890 is perhaps slightly cheaper and IMO a one card solution is always better.

Sure, if it's faster than it's good. Only downside is that the 4890 costs me 2895:-SEK (say somewhere around 270 - 280 €/Euros), whilst for that cash I still can get two 4850 cards. And is it true that if the game doesn't support sli/Xfire it's useless then? Because if that is the case - then it will be the 4890.

Are those prices for the 4850's for the 1GB cards? I only ask because if they are for 512MB cards you of course only get a total of 512MB.... not 2x 512MB so the 4890 remains a better bet with the 1GB, and of course it uses less power.

I'm going to have to agree here, Supreme Commander does become real cpu intensive, and honestly you're 3870x2 is most likely being bottlenecked by your 9850 at stock speeds.

@Tatty One: No, the price is for the 4890 card. But I'm having second thoughts already about getting two 4850 (1Gb version), mainly because somehow, the 512Mb versions are priced higher. And as you said, 1 card would use less power - and maybe I don't need to change my PSU in that case aswell. So yeah, it seems logical and worth the price.

@Kenshai: Yupp, my friends tell me the exact thing. The only problem is that all of them have water cooled systems, and they didn't get the parts from Sweden (think it was like US and somewhere in the Netherlands someone said..). But I also want a watercooled system, and start to OC. I know I must also spend some cash in that case in stuff to prevent the system to fail, like the watercooling has its own power, comes on before the system etc.etc. Everything just to make sure that nothing bad can happen...

...and there is where this forum and guys/girls like all of you come in handy.

A good air cooler and a phenom II and I'm willing to bet you'll get some good results.

I think thats a wise move, whilst the 2 are similar in performance terms, the benefits of the 4890 outweight those of the crossfired 4850's TBH. I had two Palit 1GB Sonic 4850's in Crossfire @ 780mhz and they were very nice but I always had issues with compatibilty with the odd game and CCC...... every time I installed a new Catalyst driver set, I went thru a nightmare trying to set up crossfire again, perhaps I was just unlucky :(

I have just tested to OC the graphics card (stock cooler) using RivaTuner, great app btw. Didn't know a program that small was so easy to use. I did some work for a friend, so I got some cash, not much but I'll start by getting a better cooler for the card (before a change/selling it).

But I'm still confused - do I need a new card? And most of you say go with the 4890, so I think that will be it.

Thanks again everyone.

No, you most deffinitely don't need a new graphics card. It's a matter of if you want a new graphics card. I see no "need".
