I re-installed XP yesterday to resolve some issues I was having but since then, and never before, I keep getting strange gobbledegook files appearing in my D drive.
I have XP installed on the C drive and all my other junk on the D. The files I get in my D drive are below:

D:

Left hand folder:

amd64:

i386:

I am unable to delete by the usual basic means, not tried HijackThis etc yet, and if I do have to have them I don't want them appearing in my nice and neat D drive.

Any ideas on how to stop this?

Those are probably leftover files from WindowsUpdate.

Turn off Automatic Updates.

Boot into safe mode and then try deleting...

Did you update windows or install any patches because that's what happens. The patch extracts and stores it normally on the Systemdrive but sometimes it stores it in other drivers for odd reasons.

You can delete them if you want because you already updated

If you`re scared to delete then turn them into hidden files.

Yeah, they're normal. They're on both my laptop and desktop (both running XP Pro)

I have my regedit, by default, set to save programs to my 'D' drive, so would that be the reason why they are going to my 'D' drive?
If I change it back to 'C' drive will it resolve this?

I'll just get rid of the D drive files in the meantime.

It won't move them, but yes, for future installations it will keep them on the C: drive. It is perfectly safe to delete them after the install, I've deleted them from several computers before and it hasn't caused any problems.
