I'm building a nettop with an Atom 230 and only 1GB of ram. I'm thinking about installing Windows 7 but the lack of memory has me a bit concerned with performance. Would I be better off with XP?

I would suggest XP, I tried 7 on a Thinkpad laptop with a 1.6ghz Pentium M and 1gb of RAM, and it was far slower than XP. On top of that, the Atom 230 is substantially slower than a 1.6ghz Pentium M (more like a 1.0 ghz Pentium M), so it might be painful to use with 7 :( :ohwell:

I run 7 Pro on my msi wind (n270 + gma 950) and it runs fine (including aero) just as well as XP does only I have 2gig of ram vs your 1. 7 is vastly better than XP imo so if you can get an extra gig of ram do so and run 7

I recommed getting a 2gb stick of RAM. This G.Skill memory is great for netbooks/nettops. In my Asus netbook and many others it defaults the RAM to 4 3-3-10 timings and is quite snappy over the 1gb that came with it. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231153

There is a noticable difference even using XP. I'm going to be installing 7 on it soon. :toast:

I have an Atom 330 2GB nettop, and it can "clunk" along sometimes. IMO, 2GB is the minimum, and I would recommend 4GB. (Iam currently upgrading because it is just too slow, and I hope it will help somewhat). Then use 512MB as a RAMdisk to help speed things along. See the RAMdisk thread.

Given the choice, i would opt for Atom 330 and NOT 230 which IMO is severly underpowered in anything other than NAS or Linux or DOS application.

The MAJOR PROBLEM with using an Atom as a nettop is that so many websites use java, flash, gifs etc. and most browsers are single threaded, and the Atom struggles. You might be better with Win7 than XP because Win7 is MUCH BETTER at multithreading than XP is. (Assuming you are on the 330).

Anyway you look at it, get the Atom 330, or better, CPU.

2GiB RAM should be more than enough for Win7, 4GiB is just an overkill for an atom pc. If you stick to 1GiB, XP is the way to go.

I picked this board up dirt cheap on the forums and I don't really feel like spending more money on ram than on the rest of the system. Just isn't very cost effective, imo.

Just make sure you give the system to your sister and dont use it yourself, or it will drive you crazy. It will be like working with an old Pentium 3 laptop. Trust me. I have both. There is a reason that there are so many cheap Atom 230 boards available on ebay...and why Shuttle ditched their X27 (Atom 230) and now only make the X27D (Atom 330).

Anyway, good luck with it... it's fun building these low power miniITX boxes. But you might be happier turning it into a NAS/FTP server.
