Of the free AVs I've found Avira is the best as it has good detection and a fairly small foot print. Only downside is a daily pop-up asking you to upgrade to the premium version

It has my vote. I did use Avast for a long time but it just seems to have alot of issues with detecting the rogue spyware. Security Essential had no issues finding and removing what my brother helped put on my system back in Dec.

+1 MSE (add it to the poll please). Does a great job whilst using minimal resources (it found a couple of trojans on my rig which avast missed...)

microsoft security essentials is turning out to be pretty awesome, virus+malware without 2 scanners, VERY little resource usage, but in like 5 years itl prolly be worse than norton, ofcource i hope not but thats the way of things usualy

I think MSE will stay up there. After all, its in Microsofts commercial interests to keep it good as it improves the reputation of Windows as a secure platform (about time!!)
