Dead link.

Anyways, I'm not convinced, every other review I've seen shows the HD5850 destroying a HD5830, even highly OCed.

Even in that review, a reference 5830 still wins against that max OCed 5830.
That link just proves everyones' point, the 5830 is still sub-par for that money.

The new price makes it buyable, but by no means a great choice (yet).
Drop that price a little further then it might be good.

Agreed, and regardless of how high a 5830 can go, a 5850 can go just as high and beat it, even though it doesn't need to go higher to beat it. The 5830 is a card that wasn't good enough to be a 5850, so it was cut down. A cheaper 5770 can overclock and keep up easily with a 5830.

What the heck. Why is a 5770 close to the 5830??

Because the 5830 is cut down so far that it is just a more beefy (and much more hungry) 5770.
In fact the 5850 uses less power while being faster than a 5830.

Holy crap I didn't know that... that's just ... wrong.
I looked at the specs. Now I know why that card is a complete rip.... it should at least have 24 ROPs...

As you can see in that diagram, the number of ROPs is tied to the memory bus width,
if they give the card 24 ROPs they can't end up with a 256-bit bus.
They will end up with a 192-bit memory interface, and AMD never makes cards with such "wierd" bus width.

5870 and 5850, 5770 met performance to watt ratios that AMD was going for, 5830 on other hand draws way too much power for the performance that it gives out also to the cost of it. Its basically what a 4830 was, just this is a bad bin of the 5870/5850. Now if they were to fix the binning of 5830 then it might be a worthy buy over the 5770. Right now I think AMD is thinking about the 5760,5790 5840, 5860, and 5890, and 5960, 5990, or the Radeon 68** Series.

its not a dead link. http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/sapphire_hd5830/5.htm

heavily overclocking the core can make up for the lack of rops as u can see.

now how a 5770 can be close to 5830???????

5770 is 20 or 30fps slower right there.

5770 is a weak card. 5830 is much better and that version can oc like mad.

Nope, the 4830 stacks up quite well against the 4850 because it kept all of its 16 ROPs ;)
For the 4830, all AMD did was reduced the number of shaders and underclocked the card.

and im sure driver updates made it even better now and 5770 is weak for future games while 5830 can keep up.

Just like with a 5830 you can add voltage and increase the frequency of a 5770. One good way to find out is to overclock your 5830 like mad, and then compare it to benchmark scores of a highly overclocked 5770 at www.hwbot.org or find a list of benchmarks to compare it to.

Everyone had high hopes for the HD5830 until it came out and the ROPs were cut in half which pretty much ruined the card, oh and the higher power consumption, I heard they didn't want to ruin the HD5850 sales:eek:

i will do that once i get the card.

i will buy the Sapphire HD 5830 Modern Warfare 2 Edition that can overclock up to or over 1010mhz core. i will push it as far as possible.

Actually most 5830 cannot control the voltage,
because there was no reference design so AIBs just decide to cheap out on the PCB :ohwell:
On the other hand, all reference 5770s (and some non-reference) can control the GPU voltage, thus many of them OC higher than Cypress.

5830 is the redheaded stepchild of the 5xxx generation. If you're going to spend that kind of loot, man up and get a 5850.

My 5850 has gone up to 1075mhz and could possibly do more. It's not uncommon for 5 series cards to do over 1ghz. bebbe, I wouldn't be so hellbent on that particular card, while it is indeed a good card there may be something better out there for your money. There is always the very good possibility that the 5830 MW2 edition you buy won't have nearly as good of a GPU as what was on that card. Every GPU is different. Manufacturer's know this when they send out review samples (sometimes).

You're gonna have fun when that card breaks down in a week and try to RMA it. Never ever get a Sapphire. They want you to pay a processing fee to send it back to them and get a replacement card. BS if you ask me. Just my 2 cents.
