DVI-A, DVI-B, DVI-C,

Believe it or not but i had to connect my Acer 20Inch TFT using a analog cable / DVI > D-Sub converter to get some image in Dos, and enable DVI up in Windows. So yes there's a difference in types of signals even tho the connector is the same.

I dont think these cards go out untested on the DVI port.

That makes sense on some point..but even if that is the case,I would still call the card faulty...my monitor was fine so far and now I could be forced to buy new just because of the new card?forget about it..They should make sure it will run on any healthy monitor..

Oh really, can you name that 2 types of signal? You cant, becouse there are not 2 types of signal. Some are dual-link and some are not. But these are not 2 different types.
Clearly you don't have the slightest idea of what you are talking about. There are two types of signals in DVI ports, digital and analog (how do you think DVI to VGA is possible? :slap:). The links are related to the number of sets of data signals that can be transmitted trough the connector. The type of connector is determined by the male connector, usually by the monitor. The cards have the female connectors that are meant to be compatible with all types of male DVI connectors. DVI-D only accepts digital signals, DVI-A only accepts analog signals and DVI-I accepts both, being dual or single link depends on how much data needs to go trough the connection.
If they are to be tested, it's supposed to be done with dual-link DVI-I, so that it can test all parameters of the connection.

OMG, stop missinforming people. There is no DVI-C or DVI-B. WTF
There are three types of DVI connections: DVI-Digital, DVI-Analog, and DVI-Integrated

The Digital formats are available in DVI-D Single-Link and Dual-Link as well as DVI-I Single-Link and Dual-Link format connectors. These DVI cables send information using a digital information format called TMDS (transition minimized differential signaling). Single link cables use one TMDS 165Mhz transmitter, while dual links use two. The dual link DVI pins effectively double the power of transmission and provide an increase of speed and signal quality; i.e. a DVI single link 60-Hz LCD can display a resolution of 1920 x 1200, while a DVI dual link can display a resolution of 2560 x 1600.

But ALL DVI connectors on GTX480s are DVI-I, so stop with the bull-s**t

DVI-A, DVI-B, DVI-C (...)
Of those, only DVI-A exists. The others are DVI-D and DVI-I. There's also M1-DA but not widely used.

EDIT: heky, dude, chill...

well guess what,on my gtx280 with my monitor (dell 22inch 1080p)I can only run dvi off port number 2 just like the original poster, but the monitor in my kitchen (veiwsonic 19inch) it runs on DVI port 1 and not DVI port 2, does this mean my card is fauly?? nope it means though lism's technical terms and wording is wrong what he is saying is right, some dvi plugs wont run on others. I would not rma a card for having to use dvi port 2 and would e surprised if ANY retailer actually rma'd a card for that. I could see it if there were no signal at all but there is. rma'ing cards and hardware for stupid ass reasons is why prices go up and everyone ends up paying more, in the end if thecard works, try other tests like 3dmark 06 etc etc to see if you get the same type of score/fps as tpu reviews (they are the most thorough accurate imo) then the card is not faulty, if you get seriously lower (like 2-3-4k point- 20 or so fps) then its faulty, a 2-5 fps and 500-1k score difference is acceptable window.

Well since I've only got one monitor,Maybe I could try to hook up my girlgfiends laptop via that DVI port 1,that should work, right?

Can you run the Mafia 2 benchmark for us to compare?
...and well done
so How he heck is possible that I was getting rank D in Mafia 2 (GTX480)....and my GTX470 is overclocked to the values of the GTX 480 and Im getting D with it too...

I would like, but I think is only available for Steam users. :(

HOLLY SHIT!!!You were right guys!!!About the monitor not able to handle some signals.Well,to correct it,it is probably the cable,or the DVI connector on my monitor. In the end I didnt hook up the laptop with the monitor,co I just realised that somewhere in my parts box I have an D-Sub cable and since there is a D-Sub connector on my monitor too,I've linked a D-sub to DVI converter that came with the GTX 480 to the other end of the D-Sub cable and hooked up with the DVI port 1 and guess what...It works..Thanks a lot for your advice guys, really appreciated..

You saved yourself a headache and probably some money because had you RMA'd the card Overclockers would have definitely charged you the pickup and delivery costs. :toast:

You really are a bunch of cool chaps..so whats gonna happen to this thread?since the case is solved? :)
By the way this is an example how you really learn every day, sometimes just by accident...
You are right claylomax,it would cost me approx. £25 extra plus the long waiting time during the RMA process, once again big thanks to all of you participated in this thread..

You're welcome. And to everybody: before thinking about RMA something, check, check and recheck to make sure that the part is really faulty.

I used to work at a RMA-Center of this small computer webshop.

I've seen several bull-complaints coming in like these,

a few examples would be the Windows XP vs Windows XP SP1 thing, a customer ordering a 200GB HDD and discovers his OS only allows xx GB to be seen or partitioned, calling us scammers as he cannot fully benefit the HDD :D

The DVI thing with different signals is one of my own past problems, i think this happend on my older X800XT AGP card, i had to use 2 cables in order to get a clear image, and disable D-sub / VGA in windows in order to use DVI at its full potential.

People buying for over 600 euro's on new hardware, ordering a computer case of 20 euro's with a sub-400Watts PSU, and expect that their brand new Core 2 Quad + 8800GTS 756MB work like a charm on a 10 euro PSU... These psu's tend to come in one after another , basicly blew up.

Or brand new releases of videocards, people buying brands like Peak, saving on components / VRM's and such, as they cannot overclock or anything, returning the card claiming that functions do not exist or the fan is too loud.

:)
