Hi, i have a wonderful pair of XFX 9800GT's EE, they are VERY noisy and run HOT. when first used they idle at maybe 50 and 48, now after a wee bit of Overclocking, they run at 61, and 52 idle at load they can go to 86 and 78 easily. The fan noise is VERY annoying it ramps up to 60% every few minutes, so i locked them at 35% fan, which makes them idle at 71 and 56 respectively and 99+ during gaming (im not gaming very much), no noise and loads of heat, now i can't keep them like this forever, so what was thinking of buying some aftermarket cooling in the form of 2 Arctic Cooling L2 PROs.

are they good, any other options??
and will it void my warranty, if it does, if they break in the future can i RMA them without them being anythe wiser??

I think you should clean the fan and apply some new thermal paste before going install aftermarket gpu coolers.

If you have the space do aftermarket coolers, noise and temps will be very nicely reduced.

Kuro did bring up a good point on cleaning and new paste, a $10 solution that could help keep peak temps down and thus a quieter fan.

A final option would be liquid cooling. It would cost $300 to do it right but could be applied to future cards.

Sounds like one or both of them have hsf's with little or no copper.
I would also try refreshing the thermal paste, before buying.

:respect: XFX is great for being 'aftermarket' friendly. You will not void the lifetime warranty if you buy those coolers.
With v-sync on (and triple buffer enabled), your fps will not exceed the screen refresh rate, eg 60hz = 60fps, which results in lower GPU load and temps.

With the stock 100% copper hsf, my temps were similar to yours. Idle 58-60C, load 80-90+.
With the Zalman VF 1000 .. Idle 43-46C, load 65-70C...

Good luck !

I would probably use Accelero "Twin Turbos" for 9800GTs.

I have used many of the 9600GT-9800gt series and the 9800s were about 10c more than the 9600GTs (L2 Pro coolers would be OK with 9600GT)

any decent reviews for either? specifically on the 9800 series, TBH i dont care about low temps as long it quiet and safe im very happy

Twin turbos are a little out of my budget, i may upgrade by summer or next winter so they must be inexpensive

if temps arent a concern the L2's would be fine (much quieter then the OEM coolers)

Who told you that? 60c is normal for idle temps, granted @ 100% fan it should be slightly lower. 100% must be loud though I run my video card @ 35-45% fan.

when first used they idle at maybe 50 and 48,

Normal.

now after a wee bit of Overclocking, they run at 61, and 52 idle at load they can go to 86 and 78 easily.

normal, those temps are not high.

I wouldnt be worried about these temps either, admittedly 99+ peak whilst gaming is on the high side. I'm using the Artic Cooling L2's ATM and I swear by it. They make absolutely no noise. You only need to run it @ 40-45% and you are set to go - Even @ 100% the L2 can bearly be heard but I do not recommend doing that.

are they good, any other options??
and will it void my warranty, if it does, if they break in the future can i RMA them without them being anythe wiser??

It depends on the Manufacturer, some will allow you to remove the fan, some will not. I would keep the original heatsink somewhere safe and then put it back on if the video card breaks - Then keep your mouth shut and do not tell them you removed it!

The other day I bought this card 2nd hand, for some strange reason, and it was running like a pig. Artifacts, overheating and so-on, so I took it apart, full of dust, cleaned, new paste, stuck it back together and now it's not speaking to me, the lights are on but no-ones's home.
Any ideas?

When you remove the HSF, what does the thermal paste look like ? Your HSF might not be sitting flush or may have surface defects.

It should have evened them out abit..

Back in April, I rma'd the original hsf because it was not sitting flush on my gpu. I believe the stock coolers warp easy from the extreme heat of the G92 chips. The 100% copper hsf they sent me helped alot, but still it made me wonder... They must know the original aluminum hsf cant handle it..! :wtf:

Curious, I'm wondering if you picked up the subliminal distress signal.

Meanwhile, back at the farm, you mean throw it away and by a new one?

There must have been a change in policy since.?
That was actually the 2nd they sent. The first was for a slightly diff model and it had NO copper. At least the original had a small copper plate and bar. So then they sent the PRIMO one in the pic.. heh.. free.
Going to the Zalman was the best thing I did. :toast:
