Read a post on another forum and it kind hit the nail on the head. The 6970 isn't meant to defeat the 580. The 6990 is in production and it is the job of that card to become the gfx card king. I know there is talk of the dual gf110 but it can't work under the current power envelope so it'll be cut down. I think if there are two dual solutions, they will purely be for epeen. No profit value at all.

AMD current philosophy isn't to do a massive chip (which NV do). Someone else said, if AMD took on NV in their own back yard with huge chips AMD would burn. As it is, they'll still aim for the perf/$$ segment.

It's all down to costing right now but i've got my eyes on NV for my next card unless the 6970 is surprisingly good - despite what some people might think is an AMD stance above :p

I know i wont spend over £400 on a single gpu.

I'd agree with you on the perf/$$ if I wasn't seeing things like Radeon HD 6900 Series Products Listed on European... floating around.
It seems like AMD are trying to have their cake and eat it too, because at the moment it seems they're neither here nor there, ie, neither very cheap nor more powerful.
If they dial back a bit and grasp the aggressive pricing strategy fully, I'd be happier, but as it stands it seems that they're half-hearted in both giving us ultimate performance and low pricing.
It almost seems as if after having the the lead over nVIDIA's 400 cards, they're unsure whether they want to go all out for the lead, or maintain their former "buy our pc, or their part for the same price" strategy.

Seeing as the die is suppose to end up a little larger then GF104, makes you really wonder how much nVidia was making off those cards anyway.

You know take this with a grain of salt..... I understand Charlie is not always the most reliable of information but..... He had this to say about the supposed released benchmarks.....

I am laughing my ass off. :)

So taking into account that he has been right lately..... whether you like him or not..... That could be encouraging news for ATI/AMD/Radeon Fans.

Even if these benches are real.... as long as the card is priced appropriately.... then I am okay with it.
Shit for all we know we could be looking at the 6950 and not the 6970.

There’s a lot of facts and fictions circulating all over the internet, all you have to do is desirer which is which and you will see what I along with many others see what NVIDIA is really about.

I'm so glad that you....the authority on Nvidia dirty tactics are here to guide us. :respect: :slap:

Paranoia will destroy ya.

2 days and counting....I'm alittle eager as well to see the true benches....I already bought the 580...but am still eager to see the benches. :toast: :rockout:

Does this look to have a vapor chamber?

If you zoom in and look at the bottom left the bit sticking out kinda look like the end of a heat pipe that gets sealed during manufacturing and the shape at that end looks like the edge of most vapor chambers i have seen also the length of it seams to be much bigger than past coolers.

It could just be the shaping to fit around components but then i don't understand why it's so long and shaped when it could be kept shorter like current ones and be a more simple shape.

I'm kind of unimpressed with the VRM's here

They look like the kind that is used on the 4870 and 58xx cards that get really hot unlike the ones used on the 6870 that stay relatively cool.

Man i love all this speculation stuff, its like a soap opera. "Will AMD gain the single GPU crown, tune in on the 14th to find out". Just need some corny drama scenes and an organ playing in the background as someone reads the quote lol

I dont think it will

Looked at like 20 benches or whatever

Looks like the 580's are really wrecking by 10% leads in heaven benchmark at least.

single or crossfire to.'

Some dude posted a sli GTX 480 bench which ended up to the very piont and even square with the HD 6970 crossfire benchmark

And the processors where exactly comparable, 4.0Ghz i7's on windows7.

To make a card a win it has to win in one of 2 categories:
performance or price/performance ratio
So, even if 6900 fail in taking the performance crown, there's still hope they end up as great buy cards :)

And, after seeing all the leaked stuff, I do believe that AMD is only using 6900 series to field test the 4D architecture.

Well... all this doesn't matter anyhow, as we'll see the real deal in 2 days or so :toast:

The card was never designed to beat the 580. The 6970 was already in the factories being built when nvidia pulled a sneaky and released the 580.

Nvidia obviously keeping quiet and had the 580 ready for a long time just waiting for AMD's answer to the 480.

Where i live the 580 is $700 and the 570 is $450, the 6970 should come in around $450-$500 and that will make it a kickass card for the price.

were u live GTX570 costs 486$ and HD6970 will cost 620$ -_-

The 570 prices are $439-$459 here:

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=193_1177

I averaged it out to $450...anyway it could be a little higher than $500 but i dont think it will be as high as $600.

Depends if it has a clear advantage over the 570.

The 5870 was around $620 when it was released but that was when the Aussie dollar was lower and there was no competition from nvidia at that time.

The aussie dollar is about the same as the US dollar these days so i cant see it being $620

Am i the only one who thinks the HD6970 is going to be a big disappointment? i donno why but, i dont think this card could beat the GTX580.

I was personally expecting more, as there was no doubt in my mind that a new series of cards could easily beat the GF100 refresh cards. Maybe i forgot about the limitations of staying with 40nm instead of fully switching to another process. But this was a ground up design, as opposed to Nvidia's 500 series where they are building off the same structure as before and managed to squeeze at most around 12% more performance with better efficiency and an extra 32 SP, this in itself would of lead me to believe the 6900's would kill the GTX 500/400 series in performance by a fair amount, but instead, it's decreasing in performance against the previous generation, regardless of the 500 series, the 500 series is only making up for lost time, it doesn't act as a sneak attack if it's not there to bring a significant performance increase, it's only their to improve on efficiency and get a tiny performance bump so people don't complain it's the same card with no benefit besides a better design. If prices are on the cheap and it's performance mingles with a 580 (even if it's a little less then a 580), then i'm fine with that, but still overall disappointed in what has been presented so far with these card. But of course, i can't make a truly final analysis until the cards are out and reviewed.

btw, If this was an Nvidia card, there would be a shit storm about how much fail it is, even if it was priced nicely, just throwing that out there.

best prices I've seen are from MSY, which should be close enough to you unless your in woop woop.

GTX570's for ~$450 and GTX580's for $629

The HD 6970 should easily be faster than the GTX 570, as for the 580 it may be equal or faster. Great find anyway...

if you do what this guy do
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showpost.php?p=4665209&postcount=3121

hd6970 aprox. 25% faster...
what is the #% between GTX570 -> GTX580??? 18~20???

ps: the test are extreme in some situations... with high resolutions (2560x1600) or without tesselation (Like Metro) but for the average, looks like a great result...
