Origin is the same shit as Steam....So I guess with that logic, Steam is crap too.
... I don't even know where to begin.
The goal of Origin is the same as Steam. Be an online store, where you can control access to your software and provide a 24-7-365 place for anyone to spend money. In goals they are the same, just like a house cat and a tiger are both felines.
Where they differ is substantial. EA has had a crap policy on DRM for a long time, and that backwards facing policy is baked into the EULA. EA has done more to give consumers the finger than BP (though arguably BP is still worse for their activities), while letting people know that they don't care as long as they make money. If you haven't played the mobile version of Dungeon Keeper, spend $150+ on Mass Effect for a less than stellar ending, or gotten into the SimCity debacle then you're better off than myself despite being woefully uninformed.
Steam is no angel. They're the ones that brought the hat buying fiasco to life. They have enough crap on greenlight to make a dung beetle die from joy. They've sat on their laurels as game developers in favor of moderate expansion and supporting Steam.
I hear you saying that EA is changing. They are, but not like they'd have you believe. Those "100% of purchasing goes to charity" events are bogus. A couple of bucks go to charity, and EA writes off 100% of the games' retail price off as a charitable donation. The attempt to slow down production, in order to focus on a better experience, is what we should assume out of a publisher. Changing a corporate culture is difficult, and they will hopefully succeed. For the time being, I'm not impressed enough to believe Origin is worth installing on my computer.
So I choose Steam. They have some respect, and aren't guilty of any major issues in the last 24 months. I hated Origin from the day I was forced to download it for Crysis 2, and received the most substantial disappointment I could have imagined. I can forego instant gratification on the occasional great game that EA pumps onto Origin, in favor of letting EA know that I won't accept their crap even for the great games. Most people either complain about how bad Origin sucks, or say that those who complain are foolish. Neither of these groups will enact change, because they both pay EA to continue doing what they are doing. I maintain that inaction while complaining is stupid. Complaining about complaining is backwards. Actions speak, and the only action consumers have is to not give companies their money.
