Time for me to pick the next game this holiday season, and you can help!
Keep in mind I just came down off of Alien Isolation, so the bar has been raised.

While my follow-up to AI, is Vanishing of Ethan Carter which I'm about twelve minutes into - alongside that I am considering Far Cry 4 or Dragon Age Inquisition.

Well, I asked myself the same question on the day both of these games were released.

I ended up going for Dragon Age Inquisition, but I only have 10 hours played total since I play to many other games already.

I would not mind FC4, but what I have heard its not as good of a story as FC3.

All game preference here.... 1st person shooter w/ story go for FC4, if you want a long single player RPG then go for DA:I. I did actually like DA:I for the short 10 hours I have played of it, and I do plan to play more when I have time. I would personally say DA:I

Well, first you must play all of the Vanishing of Ethan Carter. This is one very very good game! I can't answer the rest, although FC4 is sitting on my PC waiting to be installed, still.

Far cry 4 does what it says on the tin. First person slightly more serious version of just cause with added extinction of animals.

Inquisition is an OK rpg, controls are a bit meh to be fair, very much designed for a controller, and the combat isn't quite the same as original dragon age games. It's a hard one to describe.

Basically you either wanna shoot people or chop demons to pieces. They're quite different games, but both have been quite entertaining. I played very little of both for my benchmark database.

I mean to play them both any ways, maybe I should have clarified which I am best to tackle first given I recently finished AI and am playing VOTC.

Far Cry 3 was excellent, and prior to Alien Isolation, it was the first game since modded Skyrim that I really enjoyed. Speaking of Skyrim..ugh dammit I bet I won't finish that before 2025 - no joke. Holy shit, ten years it's going to be 2025..it was 1985 like yesterday.

If you're getting both anyway and playing on PC, get DAI first. Latest patch for FC4 (1.5) introduced a mem leak, which they've acknowledged and are working on. No telling when or if it will be completely fixed though, esp with no more tradeoffs. The 1.5 patch's only apparent method for eliminating the horrible stuttering was LOD tweaks, which can be seen if you look at distant textures.

Does that mean the purpose of the patch was to address stuttering by removing LOD quality?

LOD (Level of Detail) isn't something you remove, it's something you adjust. The LOD values have to do with how close the player is when the textures become sharp and detailed.

For me it hasn't been a big issue. I don't constantly obsess over texture distances that are out of interactive gameplay like some do. To me, and I think to most, the stuttering is the main problem, and now of course, the mem leak crashing if you play too long.

Aside from that, there's still some minor graphics quirks, but I'd rather they focus on the memory leak for now, because without that, there should be very minimal stuttering now.

I'm just worried they'll yet again muck something up or that their having to fix the mem leak will cause them to gloss over other problems that could have been fixed with that time.

Seems everything Ubi does on PC involves some kind of annoying problems. I've heard people say DAI has it's share of performance and other problems too though.

I vote FC4, but I've never got into any of the DA games. I've been playing FC4, and I've not had any major issues on my old GTX680 or my new GTX970. I've noticed some stuttering, but nothing major. Now, I have applied some cfg file settings.

Ya, I had stutter as well in Far Cry 3, which was all solved with a refresh rate lock/frame cap - so we'll see with FC4.
Feel free to share the files, though I'll definitely be looking into it.

I gotta say Dragon age. One of the best games I've played in a long time. I have 30-40 hours in and the story is still great and unfolding

Maybe it's just that it's more often said adjusting or lowering LOD quality. Point being if you "removed LOD quality" altogether, you'd be left with crap, at which point it wouldn't be worth the tradeoff. So it's not a very good way of wording it.

Like I said I haven't been bothered by it, I'm hard pressed to even noticed it. As I also said the stuttering and pop-ins are far more noticeable.

BTW guys, Far Cry 4 patch 1.6 just released.

  • Added hotkey for toggling the HUD on/off (F11)
  • Fixed an issue when the game loaded incorrect save from Uplay Cloud
  • Fixed an issue with performance drop for Crossfire Multi-GPU
  • Fixed an issue with broken shadows in the northern region
  • Fixed various Controls issues
  • Fixed various Graphic issues
  • Fixed various IGE issues
  • Fixed various UI issues
  • Fixed various Uplay/Steam issues
  • Memory usage reduced

You still having issue's with it huh, Pop ins well that's one i have to get still. On my second play though on hard been fun but needed a break from it too. Whats really pissed me off about the game is that you cannot have more than 1 save which is total bullshit.

I think you're confusing extraordinarily bad pop-ins with ones that are slightly irritating. It's only really noticeable when flying the buzzer and you see trees in the distance pop-in here and there. It's not as smooth a transition as it could be. Far Cry 3 had it too. Unity's known for some below par pop-ins as well. Ubi isn't that good at technical polish of their engines.

The stutter is far worse than any of it.

Agree totally on saves, and that's one of the main things we've been requesting get fixed on the official forum. My workaround has been to start a mission, then quit game before embarking on it. Last time I tried it I found out certain things don't qualify as progress saving events though, like races.

I'd done the mission where you burn the poppy fields, then launched a Kyrati racing event and quit before doing the race. When I started the game up it loaded me at the checkpoint where I'd just gotten to the poppy fields. I can't tell you how many times stuff like that has happened, and often times I have to redo other things as well, like re-purchase skills, etc.

What I propose they do is make manual saves actually log all your progress up to the point you make one, then have it so you can manually load that save separately from the auto save. What's weird is the manual save works fairly well for putting you back in the area you were if for example you save just as you get to the edge of an outpost, and you make a mistake and get detected, then just quit and reload. Yet if you manual save before quitting if at a liberated outpost, it will revert you to some earlier auto save when you start the game back up. It could be that manual saving only works as long as you don't completely exit the game. Any way you cut it it's a crap save system though.

I've not tried patch 1.6 yet, still waiting for more feedback. One person when I said that about patch 1.5 ridiculed me for wasting people's time on a thread discussing the patch, but when I finally DID try it, I reverted right back to a backup copy I had of 1.3, because as many were saying the mem leak in 1.5 is horrible.

I left off in my last session having done pretty much everything I could up to the first Y mission. I was messing around in the Hurk Monkey Statue mission preparing to do a speed run video. It's going well so far, I've only play tested to see how I want to play each checkpoint segment.

Then I heard about 1.6 and decided to wait to capture it, because maybe I can get smoother video on that patch.

The LOD values have to do with how close the player is when the textures become sharp and detailed.
I suppose you mean shader instead of texture? LOD is not about texture quality, it's about mesh quality and switching shaders. Texture quality over distance is handled by mip-mapping + filtering at driver level, no need to code LOD system for that. LOD is about having low poly mesh at long distances, high poly mesh at medium distances and high poly + tesselation for close distances.
When "texture" changes on the LOD transition, that's because the whole shader changes that suddenly includes extra normal map texture or detail texture over the existing texture.

This is a very tough decision since both games are good in it's own genre... Personally I choose Far Cry 4 since it has a few selling points: updated graphics engine (Dunia 2), accurately rendered shadows, some very powerful guns like the MG42, realistic god rays, furs that dun look like a single layer of texture & whatnot but you'll need a really powerful GPU with sufficient VRAM in order to enjoy the game on Ultra. On my end though, I ran the game on High & it's quite of a visual treat.

What's the story with Dragon Age Keep and actually making it apply to your game? I suspect you have to have Origin running and launching the game properly in order for that to work?

LOD is not about texture quality, it's about mesh quality and switching shaders.....

.... LOD is about having low poly mesh at long distances, high poly mesh at medium distances and high poly + tesselation for close distances...

This would be why LOD mods for various game engines are not actually texture increases. They can be added or removed at will.

In the case of Far Cry 4 here, it's obviously not a third party modification. What's your take on what they've altered to improve performance?

Yes, correct, I misstated that as it was late and I wasn't thinking straight. It's not actual textures but rather geometry detail via meshes and mip mapping, but it's still not only an on/off thing as implied. The effect itself is, but the distance at which it's noticeable isn't. There's a range of values that change the effective visual distance it can be seen, which is why LOD biasing has many settings, not a 0/1 on/off switching effect.

Oh, btw, this just in, apparently Far Cry 4 patch 1.6 introduced yet another major bug. Everything works fine until you reach Karma level 8, then any auto saves or attempts to manual save causes a menu hang.

So this is essentially an eventual game breaking bug, unless you keep killing civvies prior to reaching Karma level 8 to keep your Karma rating from progressing to max.

Ubi are aware of this already. Hey, at least something's improving. The 1.5 mem leak took them at least a week to acknowledge. The latest thing they've said is asking people to try relocating your save folder to desktop, start a new game, then quit and reinstall the save folder.

You'd think they could just do a simple test like that themselves. It's the kind of thing that should work on any system if it works at all.

YIKES, well that aint good at all thank goodness i started a new game before that hit lol.

well i am sure they do not have every system config or a lot of bugs would not be there in the 1st place.

For DA:I story, I decided to say screw it and start a fresh game using the default. I wasn't interested in Origin enough to keep(no pun) my choices - besides, I really don't care in the end. DA series is not Mass Effect, I don't feel that kind of connection to it, so just going with the flow now.

Decent game play so far, certainly better than number 2 and a little bit more straight forward than number 1. I appreciate this is a bit of a console port but then why no native game pad support on the PC?

Oh and what's with the nose/septums? Everyone seems to have the same septum. How do you not make a Bob Saget hero?

Because it seems to be a lot more fun than FarCry.

I'm tired of FPS games, I could only have fun playing a few of them, the one I liked most was Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The rest was pretty boring, including Crysis (I still like it because of its beautiful graphics, but playing it is boring).

Just my opinion.
