I've been swapping out my cfl's for led's just because the leds last a lot longer, although when you use them upside down even in a ventilated fixture, that does seem to shorten their life just like with cfls. Also I think the leds unrate their brightness. A 70w equivalent seems to be as brighter than the cfl equivalent.

Side ways the surly does, upright or down pointing i have still have have one fail how ever every single one that's been side ways died in a matter of months.

All 3 of my Dell S2340Ms consume roughly 15 watts a pop at default brightness. Before that I had a 28" CCFL that consumed 100 watts and a 22" that consume about the same amount as yours prior to replacing them. For me, it was basically a difference of 90 watts, which is significant. Not to mention IPS displays look awesome in comparison to several year old TN film panels.

My Toshiba 40" HDTV takes 100w on default how ever i think it's to bright there fore runs 90w running it how i like it.

I pay every 4 months living on a Military Base. Balfour Betty my housing department pays for an allowance of my power bill. So for 4 months in 100 degree Georgia weather to cool my house to 72F and run all of my electronics for a family of 6 was $15, lol.
Do you want to babysit a couple of my folding rigs :) They only draws around 400 W each. I'm on a steady 60 kWh/day @ US$ 0.3 so around $18/day. I refuse to calculate what that is in a year :)

About 6000. That's more than my yearly income. LOL!

Well the summers are not that bad but please don't tell my wife. I do have electrical heating but the only "real" heaters in a bathroom floor and in my wifes office the rest is taken care by PC's and a wood fired stove. 2400 sqfts in an old house is not cheap however you do it.

Summer time with 2 aircons on and every other daily used appliance on works out to around $85 and winter my last recent bill was $125 but that's having a car plugged in 24/7 if the wife is alone. Me on the other hand only plug in when its -25c

Computer at max output will use about .18cents a day.

All I know is thanks to my province for selling our hydro to the Americans to a near 50% hike in our own electrical costs. But hey that's the country I live in, tax and bill us just to sell cheap to south of the line.. If I had my way.... Well its best not mentioned ;) lol

omg,

After reading this I realized that I am consuming tremendous amounts of power. For the last 5 years my annual consumption is very stable... Bit high though, burning 6500 KWh... I actually had people from power company calling to ask about it, since it's twice the amount of an average 4 person house hold... I should be ashamed lol.

But since I love benching and Overclocking running 2 or 3 Riggs almost every day all fitted with 1000watt + psu's.

My test bench actually has 3 psu's: 1 x 1500 watt and 2 x 1200 Watt just enough for torturing up to 4 gpu's at once. On top of that a power consuming water chiller added to the mix... I had to put in an extra power line from th3 fuse box to my bench table.

Yes, and my state is currently halting the northern pass project because we hate everything about it. By the way, we don't want you sending your power through our state when we don't need it. ;)

I just went to the power company's site to see my old bills and it looks like I use between 2 and 3k kwhr each month, although a couple months exceed 3k. So figure that's at least 24k kwhr per year. Fortunately I get a small break of a few cent's per kwhr in the winter.

we use around 6-700kwh in the winter months (gas heat) and 1800-2000kwh in the summer months. Winter rates are about .08cents per kwh summer hovers around .14cents per kwh depending on the month (we have peak summer rates and then ultra peak summer rates)
I think this is pretty crazy because it's the polar opposite for me. Energy prices spike in the winter because of home heating costs because I live in northern New England, whereas in the summer when I start using the ACs and my power usage increases ~15%, the cost remains the same because despite the fact I use more power in the summer, in the winter the price spikes because of fuel and power use to heat homes instead of cooling them in the summer like where you live.

For anyone who cares, these are the rates I get over the course of the year. I personally find it interesting how cost can vary depending on your location and climate.

We have a tiered rate:

First 75kwh - 0.825MXN (~ $0.055)
Next 65kwh - 0.996MXN (~ $0.066)
Above 140kwh - 2.917MXN (~ $0.196)

So if I spend 300kwh my cost would be.

75 * 0.825 = 61.875MXN
65 * 0.996 = 64.74MXN
160 * 2.917 = 466.72MXN

Thankfully we live in a valley so we don't have seasons. Same 22-28C all year long. :)

Lol I don't think you fully understand what I'm talking about. Tell ya what, you stop the power your country needs and I'll stop the gas and water that gets sent to america on a daily basis. What pisses me off is we flip the bill for the hydro company to build the line to you guys. Why do I need to pay for something I don't want or benifit me? All it does is cost me money. Just like oil, we have enough oil to not depend on any nation for help.. But what do we do? We build pipelines to america that costs billions of dollars to give you guys cheap gas.. Believe me when I say this, I love america but fuck I pay for all of it one way or other. Minnesota today when I drove through the state is charging 1.95 a gallon to fill your car. For us to buy the same gallon costs me 3.52 and dollars to donuts the fuel comes from Canada. Here's another fact, a truck stop in north Dakota (and we all know ND has a big ass oil field) sends a tanker up across the border to Winnipeg 3-4 times a day to fill up and drive back to ND to dump in the ground and sell to the consumer at $2 bucks a gallon.. Someone's getting fucked in this deal and I know it isn't you guys.

What's even worse is we ship our own oil to China and we buy oil back from god knows where in any given moment and pay top dollar for it. Why? We have our own resources and can take care of ourselves but its the political idiots that run our country that line there own pockets at my expence. I had to laugh a few months ago when gas in america was $3.50 a gallon and how the ppl cried they couldn't afford to fill there cars up. I was paying over $5 bucks a gallon but what did we do? Not a dam thing and you know why? Because we have dumb fucks running our country and you have dumb fucks on wall street playing with stocks to offset the prices of everything.

When america went tits up a few years ago and the housing market crashed who's fault was it? It was dummy's that would give mortgages to ppl that couldn't afford it... In Canada if you take out a mortgage and buy a house and god forbid you didn't make payments the bank would step in and kick your ass to the street and sell the home for Penny's on the dollar and hold the original owner responsible for the remaining cost of the loan.. You guys don't pay your bills and Obama gives you more money to dig America deeper into debt and if you still can't pay your loan off you walk away free and clear except for getting a bad credit score.

Sorry for the rant and going off topic but its late and I can't sleep. Maybe I can relax and catch some zzzzz's and get back home before dark tomorrow.

Lesson to be learned here. If you bend over be prepared for the big butt *****

Oh one more thing lol, Canada wants to but a 10 cent per liter carbon tax on our own gas! Australia did it and I guess our government figures we should to. Our gas is finally under $1 a liter and takes months to adjust to the market.. So they figure let's make some money in tax that we're loosing out on with gas and make a carbon tax!

Poor gas companies and the price per barrel dipped below $50 a barrel today... Or how my heart bleads for you :slap:

I thought CCFLs were fairly power hungry. I've got my kill-a-watt empty here. Let me grab some numbers for my Samsung SyncMaster 2343bw (23", 2048x1152).

Tests with TPU open:
Brightness: 97, Watts 38
Brightness: 75, Watts 33
Brightness: 0, Watts 18

Color tests with 75 brightness, testing with http://jasonfarrell.com/misc/deadpixeltest.php
Black: 34.5w
White: 32.5w
Red: 33.9w
Green: 34.3w
Blue: 33.8w

Anyone with a similar size LED monitor and a kill-a-watt care to pull some numbers to compare?
I was actually considering changing monitors for the power saving, but it'd be interesting to see how much of a difference it'd actually make.

Just in case you did not realise it, we meant bulbs.

If you want big power bills move to the UK.
If you want to pay huge amounts for petrol/diesel move to the UK

The Americans moan constantly about the price of "gas" not so long age we were paying the equivalent of 10 dollars per gallon for our "gas" which by the way is a liquid.

In an effort to pacify the green contingent they have gone all out subsidising and promoting the growth of wind farms.
What a load of shit they turned out to be. Inefficient, ugly and put in places where they are not wanted, ie National Parks and conservatiom areas.

Read an interesting headline the other day, did you know that turbines USE electricity when winds are light, they are powered up to stop the components from freezing.

Tidal energy is the way to go for cheap renewable energy ( and nuclear fission of course) and all windfarms should be built at sea i think.

The USA is fortunate in having many forms of renewable energy whether its hydro, solar or wind powered its also lucky in that some of these monstrositys can be bulit in sparsely populated areas.

A famous author lived in my village and wrote about the beautiful views, we get coach loads of tourists and many, many celebrities visit here .
Guess what.... a local farmer with the aid of massive grants is planning a 250 foot turbine right in the middle of what is considered to be a world class view.

Sorry if im off topic but i needed to vent my spleen.:nutkick:

forgot to add i did actually work at a windfarm for a bit. The view was beautiful from a 40 ton dumptruck.

Or how my heart bleads for you :slap:
....because NH produces 110% of its own electricity and we don't want to stare at power lines so our urbanized neighbor can get HQ energy. We want no part of it. The bigger question is why doesn't the HVDC lines going through Vermont get overhauled if their capacity is too small? NH doesn't need it which is why it's been opposed.

Somehow you made this a rant about fuel costs when this is a thread about electric costs. Gasoline and diesel tend to not be huge power producers, at least in my region.

The Americans moan constantly about the price of "gas" not so long age we were paying the equivalent of 10 dollars per gallon for our "gas" which by the way is a liquid.
When I say "gas" I usually mean natural gas. When I mean what you call "petrol" I will say "gasoline". It's true that I'm not so happy with prices like 4 USD a gallon ~1.06 USD a liter, but also keep in mind that it's not the price we moan about, but rather the swing in price. If we're getting it as cheap as 2.50 then it spike to 4.00, that can hurt lower income families.

It's also worth noting that the US gov't is considering a 0.40 USD carbon tax while gas prices are low.

This is all a distraction though, this thread was about electricity generation.

I personally find it interesting how cost can vary depending on your location and climate.

per kwh delivery charge = ouch. We tend to have pretty fixed rates based on season but there is a spike in cost per kwh after 2000kwh per month. Typically it goes from the .14 peak rate to .18 for any over 2000kwh. One month we hit 2800kwh so 2000kwh at .14 = 280$ + the 800 at .18 = an additional 144$. Add in the various fees and it was a 450$ bill.

As much as we can reduce costs in winter the 100+ F/37.77+ C average summer temperatures (ie averaged over the full 24 hours, it can be over 100F at midnight in July, 90F midnight in June) and there really isn't a viable alternative to energy heavy A/C use. This is why we're thinking of moving to more northern AZ where the summer temps can reach near 95-100 during the day still, but be far cooler (65F/18.3C) at night.

My energy bill is always in credit since having had solar panels fitted, but last quarter was £510 credit I think.

My electric bill for August (biggest consumption month) was 1537 KWH, for $178.88. My current bill for month of December was 692 KWH, for $92.65. We run at least one computer 4-5 hours a day, and it could be 12 hours on weekends. Majority of the cost is from Central A/C and Central Heat. I have a natural Gas bill of $56 average in the Winter, and $20 average in summer. Although the heat is gas-fueled, because of the central heating it still takes electricity to blow the hot air.

That is like 20 times kWh usage for my household of 4. Your number does not seem correct?

LOL, it's correct alright. Just looked up my billing history. Our rates are pretty expensive down here, and seems to be about average to my friends and co-workers as well. I've got one friend who averages over $200 in summer, and over $100 in winter.

I forgot to add, I do have a server running 24/7, but that only consumes 110w; 123 when streaming movies.

EDIT: I keep the house at 72 in the summer, and 68 in winter, so the system works pretty hard, especially in summer when we average over 90 deg F from April to October, with some of the highest humidity in the country.
