PC Cant Obtain a IP Address, Need some advice!

Hi Guys,

I have a clients PC here that ive had for a day now, I got thee call out yesterday from a lady saying I cant get onto the internet. I went over and sorted out at first her Modem (Wrong password) I used my laptop to get this sorted. Then I plugged it back into her PC to make sure it was working, no good, it just keeps on trying to "identifying" network. After reinstalling the drivers, and alot of other things I have come to found that the DNS and DHCP Services will not run, I get an error code of 1068 (As shown in the picture below) I also can not get any IP address to the machine as you can also see in the picture. Ive uninstalled the AV thinking it might of stopped it, check windows Firewall, all the internet protocols are correct. Ive come to a bit of a brick wall honestly and need some more ideas. Ive also ran sfc /scannow in CMD and found no issues.

The PC has both Ethernet and Wireless and both are having the same issue so im thinking its not hardware related.

Any ideas please feel free to comment so I can get this back to the client asap.

Can You just set a Static IP through Windows Since I believe that disables DHCP anyway? The prefferred and alternate DNS and rest of the info can be found on the routers main status page.

Looking at the screenshot you provided, it looks like something's wrong with the DNS client, as some of the dependency services seem to be not operational. Navigate to the services, select the DNS client, right-click it, select "Properties", then hit the "Dependencies" tab. See that the depending service is enabled as well. Do the same with the DHCP service. This should do the trick.

I looked at the DNS Client and it says No dependencies. How do I fix that?

Im not sure I get what you mean here?

Turn one off, turn it back on, turn the other off, turn it back on.

Keep doing this until you get an IP

Another trick

Open network properties. Right click on the network adapter. Disable then enable

Download this batch file and run it. It will auto escalate to Admin. at the menu run L.I.M.P mode. let it do its thing. report back after the system reboots.

I was afk when I ran this program and I think it crashed the system lol

it will leave a log report it just resets the basic windows functions. limp doesnt make any file modifications. whats the machine doing now?

Check event logs as well, see what else is happening during these error events. Might not hurt to check the system for corruption as well ( SFC /Scannow in an elevated command prompt).

Any issues reported by the NIC drivers in Device Manager?

I found this over at Microsoft's Community forum
in a thread named, "Windows could not start Error 1068: The dependency or group failed to start the WLAN Auto Config serviceon the local computer."
It is sort of related to Kursah's post... you might wanna give it a try before wiping and re-installing as the last resort.

Step 1: Click START button
Step 2: In the Search area, type "regedit32"(of course don't include the ""), right click on the search result and "Run as Administrator". I believe you can do "regedit" to get the Registry editor.
Step 3: Click on "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE", should expand out to a list of stuff
Step 4: Next choose "SYSTEM", should expand again
Step 5: Choose "CurrentControlSet", expands again
Step 6: Choose "Services", expands to a super large list of stuff
Step 7: Click on "Dhcp", the right window will show the files in that folder
Step 8: Double click on "DependOnService"
Step 9: Delete all the words in text area, except "Afd", and click OK. You are done here
Step 10: Next under "Services", look for "EapHost", this should be a few folders below Dhcp Step 11: Same thing, double click on the file "DependOnService"
Step 12: Delete everything in the text are and click OK. You are done.

Now, close everything and RESTART WINDOWS. Your WLan should be back and working once your computer starts. Hope this saves you like it saved me. Thanks to original poster for the wonderful resolution. Your post was almost too obscure to find, but I'm glad this is SOLVED! I'll be spreading the word around to save people from the constant agony of WLAN SVC going balistic every time after a registry cleanup."

It still the same, still cant get an ip address, nothing has changed
