1080ti Asus Strix issue

Hi all,
hoping if someone can help me with an ongoing issue i have, i have been a pc builder for a number of years now and have many problems but can't solve this one YET!

I upgraded my system about 8 months ago: i7 7800x, Asus mark 2 board, Asus 1080ti Strix and Superflower 750W PSU with custom cables. Kept and use my old 500gb SSD and 4x4gb 2400mhz LPX corsair ram and corsair GTX h100i AIO.
My middle fan on my 1080ti stops working then after changing the power cable it works again then a week later it stops working and yes this is under full load.
But most recently i noticed the lights on my board isn't syncing with the strix and only an orange light is pulsing,
Not only that when playing on a game my AIO cooler have random spiking in fan speed, sometimes it will just max out the RPM or in a pulse. (CPU temp is only 40 degrees)
All my software is up to date as far as i know.

I spoke to overclockers UK and they will not exchange my GFX card if they do not find a fault with it and suggest to try a different Mainboard to see if the mainboard is faulty.

What do you guys think

Thank You

Who made the custom cables? Is there a possibility of faulty/loose wiring on them? Fan speed changes could be anything from a power virus/malware/mining issue or fan header cable not being correctly installed. You could also try turning off the RGB software, there is a remote chance it's having an effect (i.e. the RGB software on some GSkill memory was corrupting the sticks themselves a year back).

But if GFX card and cooler are having strange issues, the motherboard could well be the culprit, though there are many reasons why. If it's really annoying you, try a clean install of OS and reattach all cables carefully. If issues persist, I'd say motherboard.

Yeah, but that won't stop just the middle fan though.

Regarding the strange CPU fan RPM spikes. If you are using Fan Xpert a part of Asus motherboard software turn off the Extreme Quiet feature and adjust the fan curve to compensate. It was the cause of similar spikes for me.

The middle fan on mine shuts off sometime. Force the fan speed to 75% or so and see if it spins, if it does not try again at 100% and if it still doesn't work contact asus for an RMA.

Passive fan technology was introduced by MSI in 2008.... Asus and others jumped on w/ the 9xx series. In it's original form, MSI had one fan controlled by the GPU and the other was based upon several temp measurements on the card. As for how Asus controls the 3 fans, i couldn't tell you which fan is controlled by which sensors.

On strix series, afaik, some fans can spin according to some local diodes on the board (e.g VRM, core)

It shouldn't. Idle off should turn off all the fans, not just one. If a single fan is stopping, then there is an issue with the card, specifically that fan.

The only cards I know that do that are the eVGA ACX cards. And you can read the sensor data from those areas as well, but the Strix cards don't have extra temp sensors as far as I know.

It is a mystery, temps and card is working as it should be, I use msi afterburner as the software side of things, The fans are set to come on when temps reach 50degrees and the fans turn off at 40degrees. When playing on an open world game such as PUBG it reaches between 60-64 degrees. I did also take it to my local computer shop to have a look at the card he said he couldn't see anything wrong with it and all 3 fans were running.
But what gets me is the RGB lighting sync stops and just pulses orange, but the card was in sync with the motherboard before the fan stopped working.

I think maybe try the card in another pc first and see what happens.
Maybe a fresh install of the operating system and motherboard software i.e. ASUS thermal radar, the software did corrupt and that is when i started having issues.

Thank you for all of your opinions please keep posting and I will keep this post updated if anyone is interested.

posibilty but i would probably say it is unlikely as i would see other issues i.e. random reboots or pc crashing.
I am still convinced it is the motherboard.
Also i do have a spare silverstone 700w Gold psu i can also rule that out when i format and reinstall OS.

I absolutely agree, but the fans are all run off of a single connection so I always just assumed it was a wattage/spin up draw thing

Well i tested it on another pc all 3 fans worked and ran valley benchmark for 2 hours and everything seems ok, and this was on a AMD fx4100, 4gb ddr3, ok it bottlenecked like hell but i wanted to test the card.
Put it back in my freshly re-installed OS, and it worked fine, ran it again on valley benchmark and all seems ok, this middle fan issue seem to be just an intermittent fault, only issue is if i do RMA it will i either get a repair or replaced.
Or is this just a STRIX thing but i could'nt imagine playing on a game such as PUBG and the middle fan not working.

Honestly its entirely up to you whether to accept any kind of minor fault on a 700+ dollar card with a serious brand premium on it.

Consider resale value in due time... these cards do keep their value for quite some time and starting off with something minor will eventually turn into something broken or breaking down early. IMO: bite the bullet, get it repaired/replaced and it damn well better be perfect (that'd be my stance on this).

Its not a Strix thing ;)
