Many games do it this way, and there are some games like Diablo 3 where you end up getting shot by invisible enemies because of the narrower FOV *that you can do nothing about*.
And you will get shot from "above" or "below" with a 16:9.
Seriously, I don't get why is this issue so important (not even an issue IMO it's just something you get used to).
You're already using a 16:10 monitor so why change the ratio if it's working nicely?
I've tried switching to a 16:9 myself but for me (and a lot of other people) it's horrible. So that's why you should first try and see if it's working better for you, there is a reason why 16:9 isn't used for everything - it was meant for HDTV not computer monitors.
