they can run @ 90C thats were the cooler was designed to keep them at

I don't follow that logic. If that was true, there wouldn't be a large number of failed cards being returned. The failure rate on these cards is ridiculous, and I believe it is because they stock coolers are too small, and the fans are set too low by default.

i think its because of bad QC @nv and ATi most failures might have to do with increasing chip complexities and low bid silicon but that might just be me

this is why they have added fan control on the new CAT drivers no doubt.
I think most importantly they wanted to make the card quiet as it definately isnt at 60% fan... but fortunately you can keep it safely on 35% fan without frying it ;)

Sounds like his seller may have been sent a bad batch of Powercolour HD4850s to me.
It happens.
I had a similar issue with 3 XFX 8800GT xXx VF830s dieing on me.
Only difference is one overheated while the others made an irritating noise from the capacitors.

My Sapphire HD4850 hasn't missed a beat and it hits 95degC max load at times.

So, I'm not the ony one I see....
One guy on Corsair forum had totally same situation, also.
I hope you will be smart (smarter then me) and take some of non-reference cards (or nVidia)!!

ALSO!!!
The tech support from PowerColor finally reply (after 3 e-mails)!!
Here is what thay said: :shadedshu:twitch:

From your following list, I think your power supply could be a problem for 4850. The suggested power is at least 550W for 4850 environment.

And actually, if your electricity output is not stable, it will also affect your system.

Generic, bullshi* answer.
Here is the proof:
http://ati.amd.com/products/certified/powersupplies.html#pstop
Under Corsair - HX520 !!!!

Also:
http://ati.amd.com/products/radeonhd4800/requirements.html
Which say:
450 Watt or greater power supply with 75 Watt 6-pin PCI Express® power connector recommended

I reply to them:

would you be so kind I show me an official document from your company or ATI, where is written that user of a 4850 graphic card MUST have (or is recommended) a power supply unit of 550W.

More info will follow!!!

Is it me or do I always notice someone having a problem with pre-overclocked graohics cards regardless of the make.

Update:

Just got a new card from retailer... :toast:

It's going for sale now... no way I going to install it in my rig... :shadedshu
Strange thing, its serial number is only 3 numbers away from 2nd card I got (RMA one)...

It must be same batch!!!

And that is from second largest retailer in my country, with 20 shops in different towns!!!

IMHO, very strange...

I don't need to read that thread ! This is a special cooling design card , but There is no difference from referance design :banghead: on full load it reaches 85C , It mustn't happen like that
:confused::confused:

Stay ignorant if you want to , but 85°C is not too hot. It's well within spec.

Well 85C full load will not kill a 4850.

I know it isn't PSU... it has been tested and now I run 9800GT on it for 2-3 weeks...

I will get me a Gainward 4850 GS. It has in-house design by Palit / Gainward, 8 pin voltage connector, totally different VRM...

that psu is great :p

guess what? similar problem here with my powercolor hd4850 :banghead:
got the same PSU corsair HX520, well my card isn't dead but it's a matter of time, my case isn't that great too it got 3x fans front/back 120 x 120 mm, 80 x 80 mm side near the processor, but they sux ¬¬.

ambient temperature 25ºC
IDLE: fan speed: 50% |GPU: 83ªC
LOAD: playing tf2 everything on high> fan speed: 90% |GPU: 99ªC
if I try to play COD WaW in 10 min gpu temperature reaches 106ªC+ and the pc shutdowns.

well ill try to return the card.. ¬¬ now I know why powercolor were cheaper than the others

maybe it is heat but not the heat of the GPU \ram. Maybe the regs are getting to hot it is possible.

Like on my 2900XT i can keep the GPU and ram down 37c-55c full load but the regs are the issue and reach 70-79c.
