Yea, it's an upgrade version, however, I've clean/full installed this about 3 times, and not once did it require proof of a previous O/S.

I might buy another licence to keep for a future build. I wonder if I can use the same .edu email again.

I did buy it in 2009 and burned myself a full install dvd of Windows 7. The key I bought is still working in 2011 even with a fresh install. If you get problem saying to contact Microsoft on the phone because you can't activate it online just wait for all the updates to be done and then activate it.
