My friend brought over a malfunctioning HP desktop PC the other day, a Pentium 4 Prescott 3.4GHz.

Turned out that the GeForce 6200 video card was bad, showing stripes down the screen, which changed when I flexed the board. Putting in my spare HD 2400 cured it and installing his one in my PC showed the same problem, so it's a double verify.

He likes to play games on it, but as his PSU is only 300W, he needs to get a low power video card without a power connector. Having a quick look at the market, it seems that the best performance is to be had by either a GT240 or a HD 5670.

I've recommended the HD 5670, because it supports DX11 (he's now running Windows 7) and it seems a bit better in some of the benchmarks.

Is this the best card to get do you think?

Doesn't sound like a bad idea since it's just drawing off the PCIE slot. Any vidcard drawing only from the PCIE slot is gonna max at the same juice (75W I believe?) So get the best card you can.

Yeah, it's okay, even if that's a Prescott -> assuming we're talking about a decent quality 300W PSU. What's the brand?

That's correct, 75W max. :)

It's a "HP" brand PSU, whatever that is. It doesn't even have a mains switch at the back, so it doesn't bode well for a quality PSU, does it?

Looking at his PC reminded me why I never touch a prebuilt and always build my own. :D

Yeah, it should be fine in theory. But the PSU might have degraded by now so I am not too sure.

If HP sold a desktop covered by a 1-2 year warranty with a Prescott and a 300W, I'd say that PSU should be nice.

Nonetheless, the Prescott CPU tops at 115W TDP (if not overclocked), the chipset should consume a peak of 25W and the Radeon HD5670 pulls 65W in furmark (which is the most power demanding software for GPUs so far).

So between CPU, chipset and GPU you have a theoretical max consumption of 205W (although practical peak consumption won't ever surpass 150-180W). Throw in some 50W more for hard drive, disc drive and USBs and the 300W PSU should still have enough headroom to perform decently.

I think it's safe to assume that the 300W PSU will handle the extra GPU juice with no problems.

it should be okay the PSU,the 5670 wasn't design to drain a lot of power.
Although if PSU is that worrying i do have a cheapo EZ cool 500W brand new i could sell to your friend for £10+postage lols.
