4850X2 x2 or 5870X2

Which should I get two 4850X2's or a single 5870X2? I'm getting some money for my birthday and need help?

Single 5870X2.

Very few games will scale well to 4 GPUs.

I doubt your power supply would be able to handle two 4850 x2's. 5970 (5870x2) is a newer card, it's silly to buy older tech now. You may want to look into upgrading your processor as well.

I was also thinking about maybe a 4870X2 + GTX280 setup. Would that be worth it cause currently with a 9800GTX+ added to my 4870 the performance increase hasn't been all that much.

That's because the 9800 isn't doing anything. 48xx series is old and not worth buying anymore. One single 5870 is all you need.

But what for? Really, with a 22" monitor all you need is one 5850.

But I also have a second monitor connected as well. I use it mainly to display thermal readouts and bandwidth usage it's quite handy this way.

Don't forget about 3DMark Vantage tho cause with my current numbers an increase form two cards would be a lot nicer. :toast:

Oh, well if you actually care about benchmark scores, go with two 5870x2's, and an i7 system. Get no less than a 1000W PSU. Otherwise any game on the market can be run at high settings with a 5850 or a 5870 in your current system.

I definitely agree staying away from the 4000 series (namely the 4850x2). You won't be able to resell them for shit. They just aren't in demand anymore. However, if you decide you want to trim down after your benchmark playing and stick with one 5970 (5870x2) then you can resell one and there should be plenty of demand.
