I was asked by my Dad to put together a system for his friend with a budget of $800. As far as I know this is a completely new build which makes it a bit difficult to choose the parts since I've had to compromise in just about everything to meet the budget.

Here is what I have so far:

In url form rather then picture:

HDD
lcd monitor 20inch 1680x1050
motherboard
ati 4770
650watt single 12v rail PSU
2x2Gb 1066 DDR3 ram @ 1.5v-1.6v
phenomII x3 720 (unlocked multiplier)
cheap case with discount for buying with the cpu above
windows7 x64 OEM(pre-order)
Inexpensive mouse/keyboard...

Did I miss anything? Well I found one thing I already missed, and thats a dvd drive :x Ok added a cheap $19 IDE dvd drive, and now I'm sitting at about $28 over budget. I might be able to get him to stretch a bit more to keep from compromising what I already picked out. Did I miss anything else? Are there any conflicts with the stuff I've picked out? Are there better alternatives to what I've picked out?

Oh I already know I don't have an after market cpu cooler listed. I had to cut it due to the budget, but this guys coming from a P4 e-machine so he should still see a big improvement even with the x3 running at stock. I asked my Dad if his friend at least had a monitor(which would help out greatly), but he said no so I think he sold his old machine.

I also know that monitor supports vga/dvi, but only comes with a vga cable.

I don't know if that ram works well with that motherboard... I'll have to check out the manufacturers webpage to see if that ram will work or not.

Oh the the person this build is for wants it for every day use as well as light gaming.

Thanks for any input.

650w is a little much for that build, I think you could use a 450-500w PSU,

Also, you don't need a corsair, you could go with a cheaper but still reputable brand like Cooler Master...

Oh my after all that looking my Dad calls me up and says "ya rather then wait and get a good system you could of built him he went and bought some laptop from staples that probably won't be able to play games" :shadedshu The guy wanted something *now* rather then like 2 weeks from now =/

I went with that PSU because it was a single 12v rail, and all the other ones with single 12v rails were a bit expensive for what they offered. As MK4512 points out that PSU could have been replaced with a cheaper PSU, and it was on the "if I really have to tone down the budget to fit something in then ya its going" list.

OH and I don't really know how much games the guy really plays, so in the end a laptop may have been good enough for what he really wants from a computer anyways. Games couldn't have been high on his list if he bought a laptop :ohwell:

Thanks for all your input.
Later.

But for anyone else that has a budget like that, it seems like a very good build to start from

$55 - Seagate 500GB HDD
$33 - Samsung DVD-RW
$17 - Microsoft Wired Keyboard/Mouse

Subtotal: $747 (after $27 coupon)

If you want to cut the build further you can change the Motherboard/CPU/RAM to:
$146 - Athlon II X2 245 + Gigabyte ATX 785G Motherboard
$59 - 4GB A-Data DDR2-800

This costs $205 vs. the above configuration of $249. There aren't any other major corners you can cut after that.

4770 is not necessary if he isn't going to be gaming. Integrated graphics will suffice, and a dual core is all he needs really. The PSU is way to excessive for that rig.

x3 is overpriced.... no offense. Dual core will do just fine unless you are feeling lucky on unlocking that extra core and making it a quad.
