8800GTS 320MB SLI or 8800GTX?

so if i kept my 4600@ about 2.92 to 3ghz, and did sli 320mb 8800gts's how bad would i be bottlenecked? and if i ran a single gtx? which would in tern be the best solution for me? sli gts's or a gtx?

Look, firstly whichever graphics setup you go for, you will be bottlenecked so really there is little point you taking it into account, difficult to say which would bottleneck more for different reasons but at a guess, probably the sli setup.

If you were starting from scratch I would definatly go for the GTX (or maybe consider the 1GB 2900XT). As you have already a 8800gts then there is no doubt that going SLi is the most effective bang for buck solution, if money is not a great object then sell the 8800GTS and but a GTX, if money is tight, then the sli is the best option.

Despite what has been said previously, the sli option not only competes at times it can slap the face of the competition but only you can decide whats best for you.

If you really wanna get the most out of your system and probably spend no more money than you would by buying the GTX then sell the 4600, buy a 6000 (this CAN do 3.5Gig on air) and another GTS.

I would SLI the 8800's. SLI just has a few perks that come in useful... like the fact that if you enable 4x FSAA each card is only working to produce 2x but since 2 cards are doing that it's still 4x... not only that but because each card shares the workload you still only hace 320MB of memory but each card does half the work, so it's kind of like having 640MB but not exactly.

. But as for the CPU. What should I do? keep it, or sell it and get the 6000? or just wait till the fall and do up a nice quad or octal core rig?

Well again it's up to you, let me give you an example, Mandelore has a 1Gig 2900XT, he notices a huge difference in performance between running his Opty at 2.6Gig and 2.9Gig and at 2.9Gig the CPU is still holding him back, these top end cards are pushing so much data thru the GPU to very high speed memory with high bandwidth that the CPU just cannot handl;e it quickly enuff if its not running fast enuff, I would guess that staying as you are CPU wise you will see a nice boost in performance, add a 6000 even clocked at say 3.4Gig and it will go considerably faster, as I said its up to you, I suppose for the sake of 3 months it probably would be worth waiting for the Phenom.

yeah.. i kinda figured I would wait and see what I should do about a whole new system, I mean I just built this one in May... upgraded from skt 939 x2 3800+,2gb corsair ddr400, 160gb hdd, 2x 7800gt's, a8nsli premium.. worked fine. I see a big boost in performance now in my new system.. I think my current rig should hold me over till the end of the year and then I'll upgrade if need be..

stick with the 320mb!

the 320mb is an excellent card in its own right.you only need a GTX if playing on 1900*1200 screen minimum, you dont need the extra memory for any less. save your money cos you know how fast things will change!!! but if you have to buy another card, definatly twin the 320.regards the cpu....if you buy a 6000, you wont be able to overclock it by much, if at all so again, stick with a 4600, you cant go faster unless you get intel quad core. ram...xp can only use 3gb anyway so will make no difference. hope this helps. you have an uber system as it is mate! its not about benchmarks, its about gameplay and fps!

That's not entirely true. In DX10 games, the frame buffer of lesser cards gets filled at much lower resolutions than 1920x1200.

Also, most 6000+ can hit 3.3-3.4 with good cooling. 3.2Ghz for the lesser cores.

Agreed, and in DX10 I would think that the 320MB is gonna be used up more easily/quickly. I would prob go for the 6000 now coupled with the 2nd GTS, with a decent sale on fleabay of the 4600 it prob wont cost any more than the GTX upgrade would. That way you have the fastest current AMD system and you can then wait for the phenom to be released, see how it performs and wait for the first price drop, all about the time the first DX10 games are being released.

My vote is still on selling the GTS and getting a GTX, because of the ram issue. SLI does not add more memory, so as fast as you might be on med/low settings, high/ultra textures in modern games will still chug like a bitch, regardless of the GPU power.
