I built a pc for a very good freind of mine. And the water pump went out. I had a stock Intel cooler (unused) to get my friend running again. they are bvoth for 775 socket except the stock unit I had was for a Q6600 and the one I put it on was for a 2nd run E6600 conroe. Will this be ok? kind of a noobish question, but I havent ever used the stock cooler or air cooling. Nothing is wrong but I was just thinking about it and it started to bug me.

If it fits and makes good contact well then why not? but not all stock heatsinks are the same, depends on the chips in question, e.g my stock c2d e6750 sink doesn't even fit and make contact with a q8200 (which stock fan btw is really thinny)

I too think it will be ok. I once built a pc with C2Q Q9650 and the stock cooler was very thin too(about 1cm). So give it a try, as long as you have a cooler on your CPU you can start your pc and then you can check temp's. :D

Agree with what others said - just check your temps. There is significant variance between the stock Intel HSFs. However, one meant for a Q6600 should be fine for an E6600.

Thanks guys, the temps are pretty good. Ran it for about fifiteen minutes and they stayed at 35C. Sorry to bug about these simple things but i wasn't completely sure.

Yes, that will be more than fine, because the Q6600 stock cooler was one of the most beefy Intel coolers.

I wouldn't however, put something like an E5400's cooler on a Q6600. While they will all fit and make contact, some are just way too weak for higher wattage processors like the Q6600 and the original E6000 series.

I kinda thought so...I think the wattage of the Q6600 ran at 90 or 95 watts and E6600 at 65watts, your right it should be fine. I was concerned about the difference in the thickness of the two cpu's. Funny how these obscure little questions can cloud ones mind. lol

The Q6600 was between 95 and 105w depending on what stepping you got.

I don't think there should be a difference in thinkness of the CPU, they should both be the same, the IHS should be pretty much at the same height as the retention bracked on the socket. All 775 CPUs are the same thinkness. Thats why after market coolers just list 775 as the compatibility, it doesn't matter if it is a P4 or a Q9650, they are all the same and any 775 cooler will work(assuming it can handle the heat load).

That's Okay, because ALL LGA 775 processor have TDP lower than 100 watt (Except Pentium D series)

as long as your case have good airflow, positive pressure, and without Extreme overclock, it will be run smoothly.

The Core 2 Extreme series for the most part had 130w TDP also except for the X6800.

when you buy "Extreme Edition" CPU, you wouldn't get Intel sunflower style stock cooling:D, instead you will get Heatpipe air cooling witch better cooling than standard Intel stock cooler.

i don't think somebody will use intel stock cooler when they buy Extreme Edition CPU :laugh::laugh:

It's been a while since I've had an Extreme Edition, but I don't think the cooler had heatpipes, just better designed compared to the regular cooler. Though I don't see what cooler the processor comes with has to do with the original comment about their TDP.
