Hey guys.

My copy of win 7 is the upgrade version , so I have to install xp first then 7 on top of it. (never doing that again). But with my new p8268-v lx it doest seem to like me installing xp first. Last night it gave me a blue screen error while trying to install xp. Is there anyway around this? I just installed 7 and it worked just fine, but now I've got 15 days to activate it and it wont activate the way Ive done it. I do realize I'm going to have to do it all over again, but I just wanted to be up and running.

thanks.

Windows xp is supported by your motherboard, but sp3 is recommended for compatibility, so maybe that's the problem. The latest service pack for Windows XP is Service Pack 3 (SP3). To install Windows XP SP3, you must first have SP1a or SP2 installed. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/service-packs-download#sptabs=xp
So that's going to be a problem if xp installation bluescreens your system, unless you can get it to install (it may not bluescreen next try). Then it has to make it through the service pack installation, but after that you'll be okay. Honestly, it would be a lot easier to buy the O.E.M. version of Windows 7 Home Premium for $99 and be done with it. (O.E.M. versions can only be installed on one PC and are associated with the motherboard ID info, so after a major upgrade it must be re-activated by phone).

What SATA port do you have your drive(s) connected to? Sounds like it's plugged into the ASMedia port which is probably why you're either BSOD or having trouble getting Windows to recognize it?

BTW, you can legitimately download the full version with SP1 and use your upgrade key with that. Just burn it to a disc or better yet, use a USB thumb drive. No need to install over an existing OS.

You can either download the full version iso (available from several sources) and activate with your key or you can install your Win7 Upgrade twice*
*reason- an upgrade disc needs to upgrade an OS for the key to work... doesn't matter if it upgrades itself (it's essentially upgrading from the trial version to the full/upgrade version):
1- install Win7 (don't activate, don't update, don't install drivers)- this is the trial install
2- install Win7 (activate, update/install drivers)- this is the upgrade install

I've tried both methods- both work fine for me and both are pretty easy to do ;)
