The Atari VCS is an upcoming 'hybrid' PC/game console releasing later this year, powered by a Ryzen R1606G APU paired with 8 GB DDR4 RAM and running a custom branch of Debian Linux aptly named Atari OS. The new device will face tough competition against the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 this holiday season priced at 279 USD. The device cannot compete in specifications, so Atari will target the niche boutique game market. The Atari store will cap games at 25 USD and initially focus on indie developers and retro games with plans to eventually offer AAA games down the line.

Michael Arzt said:
Titles in Atari's store are expected to be much more affordable, with prices ranging anywhere from $3 to $25, with no fees imposed by Atari for online access.

Does it even matter? By now, surely everyone must've lost faith in the people in charge of this dumpster fire of a crowd funded project.

R1606G is a 2C 4T Vega 3 Glofo 14nm CPU, practically this thing is about the same as UHD 630.

Atari...... can you stay dead? Don't insult our fond memory of the old company.

As predicted little over a year ago, or even longer... it was clear as day this was preying on the weak and gullible. Dead on arrival

and initially focus on indie developers

Imagine being an indie developer with an already limited reach to the general audience and choosing to develop a game for one of the most obscure and DOA consoles out. This rivals the Ouya and even that console had more prospects than this one.

I'd be happier to get a Jaguar mini.
Um, that's actually what the VCS is, except it's going to have 2600, 5200, 7800, Lynx, AND Jaguar games as well as some Arcade and PC titles. It's effectively an Atari all-in-one mini system that can be updated with new titles and features, unlike other mini systems. In spite of what the peanut gallery have to say, this little system has the potential to be something interesting.

Unless they step up their pr game and gain some clout and interest from developers why the heck even trying. Absolutely no one talks about this.

Well, I don't know, I don't see really much about this. Yeah, it might become something and could focus on the indie and retrogaming niche but still unless you want to play some Atari games you'd better off with a ps4 slim or a xbox one s at that price point, sometimes you can get the xbox at 100€ at sales, and both have indies, retro games too and lots of games really cheap, and let's not begin talking about Switch. And I think what I said about developers gaining interest still stands, unless you make some deals and bring games that make the audience turn their necks and look at you it's difficult for this to survive in the actual console environment.

The linux os on the other hand might be helpful to gain some hardcore base if they let it open enough. Still, getting a xbox at 100€ for sale is just a better deal in my opinion.

Not true, otherwise this conversation...

We've been over this and you won't believe it until the actual product is on shelves and turns out to offer pretty much nothing at all and really has nothing else but a tiny niche following. In fact I reckon even then you will not change your mind ;)

You know that's where it ends up, and you know that the best homebrew stuff you will ever run is going to be bottom barrel tinkering. That's fine if that's what youre looking for, but let's not try and hype this up to anything more because its really not. Its late, its cheap in every way and offers too little.

The hardware is yesterdays' news, anything it does we can emulate on anything else... I don't see the USPs at all.

A company like Atari needing crowdfunding says enough.

Also this. It would be wise to place any big company that abused crowdfunding on a blacklist and never come back to it.

They want you to pay for their risk assessment, that is what it is.

How does hardware compare to Switch? (I realize VCS isn't portable)

How does hardware compare to Switch?
That's tough to say. The Switch has NVidia's Tegra X1 SOC which is ARM based, where as the VCS will have Ryzen/Radeon X86 based SOC. I would imagine them to be comparable in some area's but each will have advantages. It'll be interesting to see reviews and potential benchmarks.
(I realize VCS isn't portable)
My personal Switch rarely get's pulled out of it's dock...

This costs close to a pc with the same specs, looks nice and has a controller included. If you were to buy a pc to emulate older games, this could be a better alternative, assuming the platform is open/unlocked for tinkering, installing emulators, etc. Otherwise i see no reason why this should exist
