That's nothing but the ancient 80nm R600 found on HD2900s.
I've had that exact same pic archived on my HDD since early 2007. The "black corner" means a piece of the pic was cut-out in order to hide the revision of the chip found in the end of 2nd line (215RGDCKA...).

DUH! 2900Pro\XT is 90nm.

did anyone else notice that there is something wrong with the information on the die size up till now, 1200sp's does not make any sense for the die size that I have seen info on, its too big, maybe they wasted room or something or added something unannounced?

Nothing has been announced so far. There's just rumours.

I had thought so, I had an X1950Pro back in the day, and they had just moved it to 80nm from 90nm (X1950XTX etc), it makes sense that they were teething this new fab before whacking a new series chip on it. Albeit a hot underperforming one.....

Nevertheless ATi really turned that luck around with 48xx, lets hope they keep the roll rolling with 58xx

well they doubled the ROP's, idk if that takes up much space. increase something which i can't remember at the moment from 40 to 48. the shader units could be of a new design or i guess re-design and require more space? just a few thoughts. and then there's the rumor that we all hope is true and that's that it has 1600 shaders.

haha well erocker ur very confident with that statement, i better not be let down tomorro nite . So i wonder what the HD 5850 will have? if it was limited to 1200 shaders, slower memory then i think it could still outperform the GTX 285.

None of that is actually _known_. What is known, is that "RV870" is still the same architecture as R600/RV770/RV770 before it.

And the thing is, "RV870" is easily more than double in die size what RV770 would be if it were shrinked to 40nm. And the "40 to 48" (TMUs) is not going to happen if there are 1600 shaders. If there actually are 1600 shaders, TMUs will be doubled too (from 40 to 80), 'cause they are "linked".

IMO, there could very well be more than 1600SPs and 80TMUs...

Let's remember this post, just in case I need some nutkicks for being completely wrong.

My guess:

5870: 1600 shaders 32 ROP's 5ghz GDDR5 and higher GPU clocks.

5850: 1600 shaders 32 ROP's 4ghz(ish) GDDR5 and lower GPU clocks.

5770: 800 shaders 16 ROP's (40nm 4890 anyone?) 128bit bus w/ GDDR5

I doubt 5850 will have as many functional units as 5870...

....idk i can see the HD 5870 specs. but the HD 5850 wouldn't be far behind the HD 5870 unless it's GPU is clocked like 200mhz slower or something. I'm still looking for an in between card. Maybe they would release an HD 5830 with 1200shaders/24 ROPs?

is memory bus still looking to be 256-bit then? I really think ATI is gonna boom when they launch the 58XX series but when the GT300 is released i heavily believe that Nvidia performance will destroy ATI's. The improvements and changes that have been mentioned bout Nvidia's chip are unreal compared to the GT200's. supposed 512-bit GDDR5, 512MIMD cores. that's a major overhaul. Though i'd like to see if ATI would be able to gain enough marketshare and profit until the GT300 is released to work on maybe an HD 5970 and HD 5950 to counter?

Maybe we could talk about the awesome press conference Nvidia is also having on the 10th! I can't wait to see all those awesome 200 series cards renamed to the 300 series! I kid. Either way I hope Nvidia have some awesome cards coming. If they flop, it just would give ATi a reason to hike their prices, just like Nvidia has done to us oh so much. Great, now you have me talking about Nvidia's business practices. DAMN YOU! Slappitdy slap slap!!!

theres a big difference between 1200 and 1600sps man

at 1ghz the difference is 20,000 Mtexels

You do realize SPs, as functional units, have nothing to do with the amount of texels a video card can do?

yep, i'm def getting a HD 5870 when its released. within the first week. I'm also saving for my i5 build as its time to replace my poopy 680i LT and q6600 even though both have served me well for the past 2 years.

I hope for 1600 mainly cause i think it'll stand a better chance against GT300. but hmm and hmmm is all i can say as i keep pondering how powerful the HD 5870 is going to be. I really do hope that ATI rep that said we're going to be surprised was fully honest and not just hype. still.....i would've hoped for a leak by now but eh. only 30 hrs
