Maybe the $259/$379 pricing (not $299/399 as originally leaked) for the first batch of boards was actually an "enthusiast discount" to quickly sell them and get ~20,000 58xx cards into the hands of vocal/forum-posting/enthusiasts to help generate a buzz.

It may have been indeed, but also prices will have increased due to the demand still being very high for the cards, since they seem to disappear instantly. I'm thankful i bought mine when they first came out :)

OK guys, I need a hand here...

Are these scores normal for a stock 5850?

3DMark06: 17243 3DMarks
3DMark Vantage: P11666 3DMarks

Catalyst 9.11 beta (FYI the official 9.10 gave similar results)

Because I don't know what is going on, I feel it's not performing up to par, case in point, I get worse performance in GTA 4's benchmark than with my old 4870, I got a meager 10fps improvement in CS:S Stress Test vs my old 4870, etc.

Nope, switching to the other DVI port didn't do anything for my HD 5750. :( I'm thinking it has to be a driver issue. It always downclocks to 400/1150 regardless if I overclock or not.

I've already seen the XFX 5870's going for $429.99. I'm hoping that Nvidia's new card will bring the price back to earth a little.

Yeah, unless Nvidia decides to price their GT300 cards at like $500+ a pop.

I hope not!!!

HD 5970 = Dual GPU 5870
HD 5950 = DUal GPU 5850

You seem pretty certian about that, I'm not. I very much doubt there will be a dual GPU 5850 style card, the leaked 5900 card specs fall right between a 5870 and 5850 anyway, I can't see them making a dual GPU card slower than 725 core - 1000 mem, can you?

but this same card also has the full 1600 sp's per core, my bet is this will be the dual GPU card they planned on (at least for now)

I'm guessing they lowered the clocks for the thermal envelope

Well if u clock that quad @4ghz+ u should score even higher!!!

But that won't change the GPU score! It should be between 12500-13000 and not 11000.

You seem pretty certian about that, I'm not. I very much doubt there will be a dual GPU 5850 style card, the leaked 5900 card specs fall right between a 5870 and 5850 anyway, I can't see them making a dual GPU card slower than 725 core - 1000 mem, can you?

have to say i agree that i don't think there will be a slower dual gpu card. There's also a couple more reasons that i think would explain the lower clocks.

1-lower clocks means its easier to get chips to build the card instead of needing the best binned chips
2-with lower clocks, the HD 5970 will perform less than xfire HD 5870's, which allows the HD 5870 to keep its price point as xfire HD 5870's will cost more than a HD 5970 but due to the 5970's clocks the xfire HD 5870's will also outperform it, keeping the HD 5870's price justified...somewhat :p

This is one flaw i always saw in the HD 4870x2 is it cost like 2.5x the cost of a single HD 4870 so buying 2 HD 4870's was a smarter move money wise, and i think ATI saw this so this time around the price/performance scale between their cards will make better sense
.

in Technicality, the boards shouldnt have a different Number Designation Unless if they out perform the Fastest XFire boards aka, lets say you have the 5870 in Crossfire, well the fasted board would technically be the 5990X2, To me You get XFire performance in Non Crossfire Compatible Motherboards, aka NForce Chipsets, Single Slot motherboards, or you just plain dont want to run 2 physical boards in your machine.
have to say i agree that i don't think there will be a slower dual gpu card.
