Audio editing software

I have a recorded lecture but some parts are barely audible and we can't decipher them. I would need to remove background noise mostly murmuring, and also several loud noises like books closing, pages turning, coughs etc.

What would you suggest?

Audacity maybe? Haven't really used it but people tend to like it.

This post is a bit old, but if you need any help with Audacity or audio manipulation I have quite a bit of experience with signal processing and can give you a few pointers if you still need them.

Its not easy to clean up audio. A lot easier to record it correct in the first place. But Sony Sound Forge. Sony Movie Studio or Adobe Premier have tools to clean up audio
