As many of you will remember, Blue Security went under just a few weeks ago. The company offered a powerful antispam service called Blue Frog, and when it began to take a toll on spammers' networks, a russian spammer launched a massive DoS attack on their servers, overwhelming them with a gigantic botnet. Now, by a community effort, an open source sucessor is being created. The program will be called Black Frog, and will be based on a P2P network dubbed "the frognet." Because it will use many servers, bringing down even a group of them will have little effect on the network's functionality. The locations of the servers will be known only to employees as well, so orchestrating a sucessful DoS attack on all of the servers would be extremely difficult.

Okopipi works by submitting opt-outs to the merchant sites associated with spam. The network creates opt-out scripts on the behalf of all members that reported the spam. Okopipi will also act as a proxy, submitting the opt-outs for each user.

It is important to understand that Okopipi is NOT a Denial of Service (DOS) network. The network is designed to specifically PREVENT overloading merchant servers. It's purpose is simply to empower users to complain about the spam that they receive.
